Meet Jocelyn Lomahan

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jocelyn Lomahan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jocelyn, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Growing up in a very strict household where both of my parents were immigrants from the Philippines, I was taught at a very young age to keep my head down, get good grades, don’t get into trouble… so it wasn’t easy to stand out growing up. But as I grew older, I made more friends and started to discover myself. One thing I learned is that I wasn’t terribly afraid of public speaking and I discovered that in an English class in high school when I got to talk about Marie Antoinette and I got a laugh at her famous “Let them eat cake” — I had a feeling that performing was something I could do. I got into pageants after college as a way to try and win scholarships as well as find my path — I talked passionately about issues that meant something to me as well as advocating for myself. I really liked pageants, on the one hand because you’re basically up there representing yourself — but on the other hand, winning a pageant was so subjective that it took me a few years to realize that it was more about the preparation and the journey than actually winning. Through my parish and serving in various ministries, I discovered my innate gifts through Gallup’s “Living Your Strengths” exercises. They are Positivity, Adaptability, Developer, Maximizer and WOO (Winning Others Over). This is something I highly recommend people do because once you know what your strengths are, it’s so much easier navigating life doing the things that make you feel confident. But human as we are, there are always going to be things that challenge your self-esteem, some of which are completely out of your control… but for the most part, these things are definitely within your control, in that, only you are able to control how to react. I see life as a gift and through that, the best way to use that gift is through being grateful and living each day with purpose and confidence.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I was recently named a finalist as Realtor of the Year through the San Diego Association of Realtors — a complete honor to be recognized among the thousands of agents throughout the county….. It was an honor because it’s exactly how I have built my brand and business: “Through leading by example with ethics, community involvement, and contributions”. In addition to buying and selling real estate, I also am very active in my community. I serve on the Rancho Penasquitos Town Council, active at my parish Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, I served as the President of AREAA (Asian Real Estate Assoc) and also am a Board member of Catholic Charities — I have been fortunate to grow my business through my community involvement and it’s given me a way to give back in thanks for all of my blessings. Being heavily involved in my daughters’ basketball careers was also a great love — as I see so many parallels in sports and life. I started building relationships one coffee date at a time, and now I’m known for #JavaWithJoce and I’ve since invested in a local coffee company Mostra that also does amazing things for our San Diego community and in the Philippines where my parents are both from. I absolutely love the city of San Diego. For fun, I’ve started a regular community called “Hip Hop with the Homies,” where we learn a routine and perform it in front of a supportive group of new friends, no experience required! It’s a fun way to be active, meet new people, have fun and support one another. Now that my daughters are soon off to college, my husband Jay and I spend a lot of time with our dog Moses!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three areas of focus that were most impactful in my journey (and still are) are Relationships, Mindset, Discipline.

For those early in their journey, no matter where you are in your journey, know that it’s never too late to start or cultivate these concepts.

Discipline is probably the toughest of the three partly because we live in such a “shiny new object” world with social media, it’s so easy (and I’m guilty of it) to get distracted by what everyone else is doing. Doing the things you need to do to move the needle forward to your goals is the fastest way to achieve them. Doing what you don’t feel like doing, but know you must, is what’s going to set you a part from everyone else — because most people do not have the patience to improve 1% each day. Every successful entrepreneur will tell you that their success didn’t happen overnight.

Mindset, having a positive mindset, will direct your every move. What we say to ourselves is so powerful, and even if you have to FORCE yourself to talk positively to yourself, you must do it. On days when I wake up worrying, I go to my voice memo…. there I have a one minute “Morning Manifestation” — I recorded it so that I could hear myself telling myself all of the wonderful things that I have in my life and all the reasons to be grateful…it’s amazing how that simple thing can set the tone for the rest of your day…. I highly recommend it!

And Relationships…. human connection is so important for your physical and overall well-being. Your family, your friends, your colleagues, your clients, your acquaintances, your God…. all of these things require work and time — and they are so worth it. When all else is gone, your relationships and the memories you create are what lasts.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
“The riches are in the niches.” This is so true and being able to identify your ideal client or your “avatar” is something I highly recommend. And niches can change as you grow and learn. At this stage in my real estate career, after 20+ years, my typical client is in the “sandwich generation”….. typically between their 30s-50s, they are established in their careers and often have already purchased a home, but are looking to do more…whether that is to upsize into a larger house, buy investment properties or downsize because they are empty-nesters. These people are extremely busy with their career, family life and hobbies so they entrust me also with helping them with their aging parents as well as their growing adult-aged kids. It’s a complete honor to serve this clientele because of the mutual respect and trust.
