We recently connected with Jocelyn R. Taylor and have shared our conversation below.
Jocelyn R., so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Being the only one in the room is an experience and skillset that requires adaptability, resilience, and a commitment to self-empowerment. When you’re the only one who looks like you in a space, it’s easy to feel isolated, even self-conscious. However, I’ve found that these moments are often the most valuable opportunities to bring unique perspectives to the table to learn, thrive and foster diversity in thought.
The first key to success in these situations has been building confidence through preparation. When I enter a room as the “only one,” I understand that my value goes beyond appearance—it’s grounded in my skills, insights, and ideas. Thoroughly preparing myself in knowledge and strategy helps me feel grounded and confident. This preparation also allows me to voice my opinions clearly and assertively, ensuring I’m heard and respected.
Second, I’ve learned to lean into authenticity. Early in my career, I sometimes tried to blend in, muting parts of myself to be more “acceptable.” Over time, I realized that it was precisely my unique experiences that allowed me to offer fresh insights. By embracing my authentic self, I not only added value to discussions but also felt more comfortable in my skin, building stronger connections with those around me.
Finally, I actively seek allies and build relationships within the room. I’ve learned the power of connecting with others on shared goals and mutual respect. By cultivating genuine relationships, I can create an environment where collaboration and support make me and everyone more effective.
Being the “only one in the room” has taught me that representation goes beyond just being present; it’s about contributing with purpose, authenticity, and resilience. In doing so, I feel emboldened because I have learned to create space not just for myself, but for future voices who will add to the room’s diversity and strength.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
In my quest for continuous growth and evolution, I am mindful of everything I consume—whether it’s food, people, media, stories, or entertainment. Throughout my life journey, I often ask myself: Does this enrich me? Does it bring me happiness? Does this person energize or drain me? And, most importantly, how do I feel afterward? By reflecting on these questions, I consciously let go of any people, places, or things that hinder my progress. This practice helps me stay focused, light, and fully prepared to LayerUp! and pursue my goals with clarity, confidence and purpose.
Earlier in my career, I was a trailblazer in media, magazine publishing, and tech. Taking a leap of faith, I founded JRT Multimedia, LLC, in 2010—a full-service strategic brand management, events, and creative media agency offering Management Consulting Services (MCS). As Chief Brand Media Strategist, I lead project management and consult on a wide range of assignments, from short-term projects to long-term initiatives, serving clients across corporate, entertainment, multimedia, technology, and nonprofit sectors.
My agency recently relaunched our in-house social enterprise, LayerUpWithJRT™ (“LayerUp!”). Originally, I coined “LayerUp!” as a motivational phrase to inspire confidence, courage, and self-expression in women throughout my career as a magazine publisher and media leader. Now, it has evolved into a global brand that empowers organizations, communities, and educational institutions with proprietary ET&I™ (Empathy, Transparency & Inclusion) learning modules, delivered across various platforms. As a certified Life, Health, and Executive Performance Coach, I design transformative wellness programs for corporate brands, A-list celebrities, C-suite executives, and aspiring changemakers. LayerUp! also amplifies BIPOC voices and engages broader audiences through curated discussions, workshops, and social events.
As a social enterprise curator and inspirational speaker, my approach to wellness transcends conventional training. I integrate holistic health practices and motivational techniques into the LayerUp! philosophy, committing to educating people on self-care, nutrition, health, and fitness. I aim to be a transformative influence in wellness circles and on global stages. My passion for charity work and philanthropy further drives my vision to collaborate with other changemakers—Unicorns—and push boundaries, inspiring a movement for G.C.O.C.™ (Global Citizens of Consciousness, Change & Color) to stay curious, elevate, and LayerUp!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, three key qualities that shaped my journey are resilience, empathy, and strategic vision. Resilience enabled me to adapt to challenges and push forward, even when circumstances were daunting. Early in my career, I faced being the “only one in the room” many times, and resilience helped me stay focused and grounded. For those starting out, remember that setbacks are often temporary and necessary for growth—learn from them, adjust, and keep moving forward.
Empathy has been essential for building meaningful connections and understanding others’ perspectives, especially as a leader. I recommend embracing active listening early on; prioritize understanding team dynamics and client needs. Empathy strengthens collaboration and opens doors to new ideas and innovative solutions.
Finally, a strategic vision allowed me to see beyond immediate tasks and focus on long-term goals, which guided the direction of my work and decisions. Early in your journey, hone this skill by setting both short- and long-term goals and regularly evaluating your progress. Take the time to reflect on your path, adjusting as necessary. Cultivating these qualities—resilience, empathy, and vision—can empower you to face obstacles and navigate your career with confidence and clarity.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes, I’m absolutely looking to partner and collaborate with like-minded changemakers —innovators and leaders who are committed to driving meaningful impact and elevating BIPOC voices. Through LayerUp!, I aim to create a collaborative space where we celebrate achievements and set a new global standard for purposeful listening, learning, and transformative thinking. Together, we can push boundaries and build initiatives that foster empathy, transparency, and inclusion on a global scale.
