We recently connected with Jocelyn Rico and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jocelyn , great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.
When I decided to make my crochet hobby into a full time career, I found the ability to take risks by overcoming inner fears within myself. I faced a lot of criticism in my first year of designing on how Crochet designing could become a full time career let alone make money. I began taking risks by placing myself in environments to meet new and influential personalities and show off my talent to the world. Designing and Hosting my first Individual Fashion show this year in May 2023 was one of the biggest risks I took that gave me the confidence to know this is my passion.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
LavishQueen Fabrics is a Custom Crochet Clothing Line launched in 2020, with the slogan of “Lavish Designs with you in mind” . I was inspired to start my business from the continued growth of my hobby that quickly turned to lifestyle. At the beginning of the the pandemic, I picked up my old crochet hobby as a way to stay busy. As I continued to gain more and more skill sets, I began giving items to friends and family. I was inspired to make it a business once I felt in my heart how people enjoyed hand made clothing that I designed. As we continued to grow and expand, over the years LavishQueen Fabrics has participated in numerous pop up shops, Festivals, Fashion Shows, & Photoshoots. In 2022 LavishQueen Fabrics was also featured in 303 Magazine, showing 15 off fierce Crochet Designs that struck the crowd during the “Life of Fashion Show”. As we continue to be blessed along our Journey, stay tuned for the upcoming “Everything Lavish” Winter Collection Drop December 15th!! Follow us on IG, Facebook & TikTok for updates!!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back along my journey, three qualities I would say were most impactful were Motivation, Patience & Dedication. Staying motivated even through the most difficult projects will always be the most important. Patience is next to to e most important because know that all bodies, styles and designs are not going to be the same require constant patience. Lastly staying dedicated through turning points, difficult obstacles and big changes it what help me get through the tough times. My advice for anyone in the early stages is to stay focused on through every obstacle, avoid as many distractions as possible and make sure that you’re 100% passionate about what you’re investing your time and money into.
