Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joe Bishara. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Joe, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I’ve been extremely fortunate in my life and my career to be placed alongside people that have pushed me to be the best that I can be. Sometimes those pushes were coming from a conscious, nurturing place; sometimes those pushes were subconscious and intended to be discouraging. Regardless, my primary mentors in my life were always there to remind me that the only thing that could hold me back from what I wanted to accomplish was me.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I have collaborated on over 250 theatrical productions across the United States as an Actor, Consultant, Director, Educator and Producer. I’m the Theater Supervisor for the City of Dublin, Ohio (Abbey Theater of Dublin), Founder and Managing Director of New Albany Youth Theatre, a Creative Consultant for Broadway2LA Acting Studio and Evolution Theatre Company, as well as the Principal Consultant for Spotlight Columbus’ annual South Asian Theatre Festival. I am the creator of the Abbey Theater of Dublin’s award-winning Virtual Theatre Project and co-founder of the annual Otterbein Playwrights Collective.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Be impeccable with your word: recognize that you are always ‘auditioning’. Make a concerted effort to demonstrate professionalsim at all times.
Always do your best: practice the way you rehearse the way you perform. Treat your work with reverence; however, give yourself grace as your best can change from day to day.
Don’t take anything personally: understand that if someone is providing you with constructive criticism, it is because they believe you are able to do better/more. It should be seen as a compliment.
Identify Mentors and understand that they are also human: A good mentors can teach you what to do (based off of their own life experiences) and subsequently what not to do.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
The Theatre companies I run and collaborate with are primarily focused on raising up new theatrical works. I am always on the lookout for new playwrights with fresh perspectives and lighting designers that are willing to collaborate. I can be reached at joe@joe-bishara.com
