We were lucky to catch up with Joe T. Johnson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Joe T. , we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I started making music and writing my songs at the age of sixteen. I enjoyed writing songs and being part of my local music community building my own identity and working hard on writing songs and performing. I would regularly perform my songs at local gig nights and I liked to watch gigs and observe other musicians and performers, this helped my self-esteem and confidence grow.
I remember playing my first big show of 1200 seats at the ‘Hall for Cornwall’ when I was sixteen and it was just me and an acoustic guitar, no band. I was terrified. I remember throwing up before playing and having cold sweats in the dressing room. After taking this risk and doing something out of my comfort zone my confidence grew and I started to believe in my abilities as a musician. I believe that confidence comes from the belief in your own hard work, being true to yourself and developing good habits.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a London-based ‘new wave’ Indie artist musician/songwriter and performer. The most exciting thing about what I do is being able to perform my music in front of a live audience. The special thing about performing is the community and a feeling of connection and accomplishment. I enjoy being able to meet people and watch other musicians performing and playing music.
We recently played at a venue called 93 Feet East on Brick Lane in Shoreditch and for me, this was a special moment. It was a big show for us, it’s our first London headline show in such an iconic venue. We also recently finished recording a new record, and we will be teasing this by releasing the first single in March 2025. We are excited to be playing new tracks at my next live show which will be taking place in Shoreditch on 11th January at a venue called ‘The Old Blue Last’
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think it’s important to not be comparing yourself to others and to just keep working on yourself. Here are a few pointers that helped me grow.
Communication – It’s important to communicate a vision and motivate the team. Also when meeting new people communicating and being polite and engaged are very important.
Risk-taking – It’s important to take risks. I believe it can lead to growth, new opportunities and creativity. It’s important to try new things.
Growth mindset – By having a growth mindset helped me view setbacks as opportunities to learn. Also setting realistic goals and working towards them improved my productivity and overall progress on projects.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
They were always very supportive encouraged me to try new things and were supportive of my music. This motivated me and I’m sure helped me develop a strong sense of self.
