Meet Joel Brown

We were lucky to catch up with Joel Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.

Joel , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

This was one of the hardest parts for me. Understanding the why. Growing up I was always lost. Didn’t know who I was or what I liked doing.

Luckily for me I was introduced to a film production class in high school due to the counselor having a hard time placing me in classes due to my grades

What started as a course just for credits became a lifelong calling towards film and cinema

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

In short I’m a cinematographer. A cinematographer controls the look of a film. We have a lot of tools at our disposal that we use to paint a scene or show the viewer about a scene visually with light, set design, and attire.

The most exciting part of cinematography is creating art. It is amazing what a motion picture can accomplish and I see this art as being able to create something beautiful in motion. It is similar to photography and how photographers use different techniques and elements to make a picture pop.

Besides doing this for the sake of art, I also have a website overlandfilms.org. What we do is branded content and documentaries.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The most impactful skills I have learned so far is writing for television in the form of scriptwriting, photography basics (such as cameras, lighting and composition, and theory through analyzing why directors do the things they do. This has been very helpful for me from school.

The advice I would give is to take courses online and go to school. I think when learning something new you have to be a sponge and be willing to soak in new information daily.

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?

I would not work and focus entirely on film
