We recently connected with Joel Goldberg and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Joel, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I found purpose through storytelling. From a young age I fell in love with the entertainment industry. Movies are my what make me who I am. I love immersive stories and worlds to just sink into. It’s always exciting. I love books, video games, and basically anything that can tell a story. I connect most with films. I love how stories can convey emotions and make us feel a certain way. I find film is the best way to tell someone who they are and the kind of person they are by the stories they write

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I feel telling stories is my priority. Obviously making money from it would be excellent, but it’s not at the top of my list. I just want to make cool movies. They don’t have to be deep or thought provoking; (although they can be) I just want to tell stories. I love the collaboration of filmmaking. I don’t see myself as some egotistical maniac. I know what I’m good at and not so good at. It’s so much fun to see people working together to make one project. i always love to incorporate everyone each step of the way. If I’m the director I would never tell the makeup artist to stay in their lane if they have an idea or a line that’s better than what we wrote. I love keeping it open and simply just having fun. If I’m in charge I ensure everyones comfortable and enjoying themselves. It’s truly special when a bunch of people believe in your idea and help make it a reality.
I would like to start producing as well. I haven’t quite decided a name for my film company but i do most of my business through Instagram @filmmakingiswhatido.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. How to treat your clients. always be flexible if they dont like the final result or need revisions to the film or commercial.
2. Be on time. timing is everything with filmmaking. I’ve seen first hand how not showing up or being late affects the entire crew. this especially affects an actor for example, especially if they aren’t getting paid.
3 Learn to Network. attend film festivals, whether your film got in or volunteer. you meet a lot of like-minded people who want to make connections. I’ve made some very valuable connections through film festivals.
These key points have led me to where I am. I only intend to move up. the film industry is very tough. One other piece of advice is that filmmaking is worldwide. Don’t limit yourself to the idea that you must be in New York or LA to succeed. film is everywhere. you just have to look.

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
i would spend it making movies nonstop. maybe a festival or two to celebrate but just try to make all my dream films become reality.
