Meet Joel Myers

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joel Myers. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Joel, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

I’d say my work ethic really comes from growing up playing competitive sports. When you’re constantly training, you learn early that improvement isn’t about giant leaps — it’s about showing up every day and getting just a little bit better than you were yesterday. That mindset of breaking big goals into small, achievable steps has shaped everything I do. It’s basically the philosophy of Kaizen: continuous improvement, done consistently over time.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m an Australian tennis professional currently serving as the Director of Tennis and Pickleball Operations for Impact Activities in the City of Coronado, overseeing 17 tennis courts and 8 pickleball courts. I coach a wide range of players from USTA league competitors to high-level juniors pursuing college or professional careers, and I regularly share free tennis technique and strategy content online to help players everywhere elevate their game. Tennis has given me incredible experiences, and my focus now is on growing the sport within the Coronado community and greater San Diego while passing on the knowledge I’ve gained to players around the world. You can find me on court at the Coronado Tennis Center or online sharing what I’ve learned.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, the three qualities that had the biggest impact on my journey were understanding what people truly want, over delivering on value, and never stopping the learning process. In coaching and in our business everything starts with knowing your client’s goals. When you understand what they’re aiming for, you can tailor your approach and help them get there faster. The second piece is over delivering on value. Whether it’s a lesson, a clinic, or an entire program, I’ve always believed in giving people more than they expect. And finally, always keep learning and share as much as you can. The game evolves, players evolve, and the industry evolves, so staying curious and generous with your knowledge is essential. For anyone early in their journey, know the product, know the client and overdeliver on the experience.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

A book that played a major role in my development is The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, especially the concept of the habit loop. Cue, routine, reward. We’re all a product of our habits, whether we realize it or not, and understanding what makes them tick gives you the power to redesign them into something more productive. The book taught me that if you can identify the cue that triggers a behavior and the reward you’re seeking, you can swap out the routine for something healthier, more effective, or more aligned with your goals. That framework changed the way I approach personal performance, coaching and running the business.
