Meet Joel Selaah.

We were lucky to catch up with Joel Selaah. recently and have shared our conversation below.

Joel, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by keeping God first. He gave me the gift of creating the beautiful music and art that you all hear and see from me. Nothing is done without him.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Joel Selaah. Formerly known as Joedi Summerville or Avèk La’Mou to others. I was born and raised in Tallahassee, Florida. I am a Singer-Songwriter and Producer. I also host and would call myself a Fashion Stylist. I’ve been singing since I could speak. I truly love to use my voice. What’s special is that the use of my voice has opened doors to do things like be a cohost on The Underground Railroad at WVFS for a year and a half or host my former monthly showcase called “The Everything With Love Show”. My brand is about the Soul. So when you hear my music or see my fashion or hear me speak, you’d be able to say “That’s Soulful”. Be on the lookout for new music soon. I won’t say when but trust and believe that it’s coming.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Passion, patience and being prepared. The passion for whatever it is you do cannot be taught. I believe you have it or you don’t. But the patience that you have when you do have a passion for something can be learned and it will have to be honestly. Sometimes you have to wait your turn. Sometimes when you know you have something to offer, you may get overlooked but don’t worry because while being patient, this is where being prepared comes in. You never know when your number will be called. The preparation is when you practice when no one is watching, the lines you rehearse, the piece you’ve ran through over and over, the interview questions you’ve rehearsed with a friend. That’s how you improve and develop when you’re starting out. When your name gets called, you’ll be ready.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Off the top of my head, musically I’d love to collaborate with 9th Wonder, Pete Rock, Cody ChesnuTT, Kendra Foster, and Robert Glasper. Also do another full project with my bros BackPackBeatz & Kiezin. Fashion wise, I’d love to collaborate with Adidas, Talley & Twine, Sergio Tacchini, April Walker & Misa Hylton. I’m honing my chops in acting as well so I’d most definitely would like to work with Debbie Allen, Spike Lee, Tyler Perry, & 50 Cent.
