We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joella Hopkins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Joella, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
For me, purpose has always been deeply rooted in culture and community. I learned early on that success isn’t just about achievement, it’s about connection, intention, and impact. I saw how powerful storytelling could be when it came from the heart and honored where we come from.
That realization shaped everything. I noticed that many local entrepreneurs had incredible stories, but lacked the tools to share them in a way that felt true to their roots. That’s when Branding Aloha was born, not just as a branding agency, but as a platform to elevate local voices and tell stories with integrity.
My purpose became clear: to blend strategy with cultural sensitivity, and to help businesses lead with authenticity. It’s not just about building brands; it’s about building trust, preserving identity, and making sure every client feels seen and heard. That’s the kind of impact that keeps me going, and it’s what gives my work meaning every single day.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
At Branding Aloha, we don’t just build brands, we build bridges between culture and commerce. I’m Joella, and my work is rooted in a deep love for Hawai‘i and a passion for helping people tell their stories with clarity and heart.
We specialize in authentic brand strategy, creative design, and storytelling for entrepreneurs, creatives, and purpose-driven businesses. What makes our approach special is that we lead with aloha, every project is personal, intentional, and grounded in the values that shape our island communities. We’re not here to follow trends; we’re here to help you create something that feels like home.
What excites me most is helping people discover their unique voice and share it with confidence. Whether it’s a startup trying to find its footing or a legacy business needing a refresh, every client comes with a story worth telling, and we’re honored to bring it to life through thoughtful, culturally grounded branding.
At the heart of Branding Aloha is the belief that branding isn’t just about visuals, it’s about vision, identity, and connection. That’s what makes our work meaningful, and that’s the spirit we bring to every project.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
For me, the most impactful qualities have been:
1. Deep Listening
A lot of my work begins with hearing someone’s story, not just what they want to say, but what they mean to say. That requires listening not just with your ears, but with empathy and intuition. It’s one of the most important parts of the Branding Aloha process. If you’re just starting out, learn to slow down and really hear people. That’s where the good work begins.
2. Staying Rooted in Values
Hawai‘i teaches you that your values are your foundation. That’s something I carry into every project, making sure the work reflects not just trends, but the truth of who someone is and where they come from. For anyone building something from the ground up, I’d say: don’t chase what’s popular. Build from what’s real to you, and the right people will connect with it.
3. Clear Communication
From guiding clients through their branding to making sure the message is consistent across platforms, clear communication has been key. It helps build trust and keeps the process grounded. If this is something you’re developing, start by simplifying. Say less, but mean more. It’s a skill that keeps evolving, but one that makes every part of the journey smoother.
These qualities help me show up with intention and that’s what makes the work at Branding Aloha feel meaningful, every time.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is someone who leads with purpose and values authenticity over perfection. At Branding Aloha, we work best with people who care deeply about their story, their community, and the impact they want to make, whether they’re launching a new business, refreshing an old one, or stepping into entrepreneurship for the first time.
We’re a good fit for clients who aren’t just looking for a logo or quick fix, but who are ready to dig deep, get clear on their values, and build something meaningful and lasting. If you come to us with heart, honesty, and a willingness to collaborate, we’ll meet you with the same energy, and then some.
Whether you’re a small business owner in Hawai‘i or someone rooted elsewhere but connected to the spirit of aloha, we’re here to help you tell your story the way it deserves to be told.
