Meet Joelle Benvenuto

We recently connected with Joelle Benvenuto and have shared our conversation below.

Joelle, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
I was fortunate to be raised by parents who believed in and practiced self-discipline in both their professions and their pastimes. Growing up in such an environment taught me that self-discipline is a form of self-respect and a cornerstone of maintaining a healthy balance, which is key to self-acceptance. For me, self-discipline is a means of staying true to my ideals, desires, and objectives. It provides me with the necessary space and energy to pursue my aspirations. When I require time to refine an idea, I have the discipline to step back and allow it to develop within me. I eschew rushing towards a goal, as I believe it is not the appropriate approach. When I have to accomplish something my brain does not want to, and that is really the challenging aspect of discipline, i try to trick my brain. I try to feed it with different perspectives, or I present it with strategies that would be easier to accept, I eliminate the noise to be more focused, I envision the happiness of achieving the rejected goal. This illustrates a personal approach to overcoming resistance and cultivating self-discipline.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My journey defines me as a self-made individual. I’ve always preferred self-discovery over formal instruction, relishing the freedom to learn at my own pace. Authenticity is paramount to me—I strive to remain true to both myself and the world around me. Finding joy in every aspect of life, I endeavor to foster love and positivity, guiding humanity towards a brighter future. As a visually-oriented person, I am captivated by beauty and aesthetics in all their forms. Art, with its myriad expressions and colors, serves as my primary inspiration. Architecture, in particular, speaks to me with its blend of space and protective embrace, while its diverse styles never fail to intrigue me.

Recently, I’ve delved into contemporary jewelry design as a means to channel my passion for modernity and minimalism. Embracing unconventional materials, such as nylon fiber, galvanized steel, and titanium chain, has granted me a newfound sense of creative freedom. I’m thrilled to announce that my creations are now available for purchase at the Whitney Museum, and I’m eagerly anticipating an upcoming exhibition in Palo Alto.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
To me, three qualities stand out as profoundly impactful: passion, curiosity, and belief in the process. Passion fuels our endeavors, while curiosity serves as a golden key to unlocking new avenues of growth. Allowing ample time, space, and energy for development is essential, as is embracing learning as a lifelong journey. For me, the process holds greater significance than the end result; it’s about the evolving journey. I often revisit previous steps, each time experiencing them anew, recognizing that our evolving life experiences continually shape our perceptions.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My surroundings are integral to my life. I frequently discuss my goals, dreams, and challenges with my family, friends, and colleagues. By sharing these aspects of my life, I am constantly exchanging information and milestones, including any obstacles I encounter. Often, during these interactions, I gain insights and ideas to overcome obstacles, and I subsequently pursue solutions independently. Problem-solving is incredibly enjoyable for me; it’s where I find the most joy. Additionally, I have a clear vision of where I want to be, and I actively pave the way toward that destination. Surprisingly, opportunities often arise from this clarity, and I am always quick to seize them
