Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joëlle Nager. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Joëlle, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Since the age of 6, I have been taking part in extra-curricular activities such as tennis, biking, dancing, piano, singing, theatre, composition and painting. Next to school with weekly exams, I attended masterclasses and competitions in music, science, art and languages. Such a schedule taught me how to use my time wisely and effectively to be able to keep up with all tasks. Enjoying all these hobbies lead to a healthy work ethic that I place into effect until this day: to be able to expand my knowledge makes me happy.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a film music and concert composer, working with orchestras, also as a conductor.
Originally from Switzerland, I studied Film Music Composition and Conducting at the University of West London and finished my Master’s Degree at the Berklee College of Music, whereupon I completed two simultaneous internships in film studios in LA. I worked as a film music composer on the Swiss movie “EGO” that won twice the Best Original Music Award and my latest orchestral composition was chosen for the 100-Jubilee Concert of the SUISA, the Swiss Music Rights Organisation. Along the way, I had the opportunity to conduct and record my music at Air Studios London. This year, first performances of my concert music will be heard across the U.S.
I rejoice when I can let the characters of a movie come to life through music – to underscore all the components of a movie such as the setting, the colors, the camera angles, etc. is a fulfilling experience to me.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities that were most impactful in my journey were: languages, creativity and flexibility. Having learned 7 languages allows me to communicate fluently with people – to exchange words and thoughts is very important to me and my profession.
Creativity is what leads me to compose, it is therefore pivotal to my career.
To be flexible, especially in where I live and reside, was important for my path, too. Throughout my studies I moved between London, Spain and Los Angeles.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Changes in settings such as for example physical activities like walking, sports, relaxing by breathing in fresh air or calling a close person to share.
