We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joelmy Olivo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Joelmy , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My professional ethics comes from making a good song, a good beat, and always leaving a good impression on the people I collaborate with. I always strive to give my best every time I have to make a beat. I always try to be as punctual as possible. If I have to deliver a production within 1 week, I try to deliver it in 2 or 3 days. And always be willing to collaborate.
I wake up every day with the same desire that I had more than 10 years ago when I first started using the DAW. And I haven’t stopped learning since that day. Every day I see a tutorial, a tip, a podcast, anything that nourishes me as a producer or musician. And that’s why learning has been the key to improving my work ethic.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a music producer, musician and content creator from Venezuela. I have collaborated with artists around the world, and my music has been placed in major Tv Shows such as El Gordo y La Flaca (Univision), and in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (NBC). I’m also part of songwriter team from Venezuela called “TVT”, fulfilling the rol of producer.
Since young, the behind-the-scenes of the creation of songs always caught my attention. That curiosity led me in 2014 to download FL Studio and start learning music production. Inspired by legends like Timbaland, Pharrell Williams, Tainy, Kanye West. To date, I get inspiration from many producers and artists of different genres and styles.
I’m also a content creator, using my platform on social media to teach how you can become a better producer, musician and how you can improve your creative skills to find your own sound.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
These 3 things were fundamental to getting to where I am and getting me where I want to be:
1. Don’t stop learning: I always give this advice to people who ask me how I’ve achieved what I have. You can apply this to any area of your life. In my case, it has been very helpful. I feel that when you stop learning you get stuck at a point where you won’t be able to continue. The world is constantly changing and you can’t stay behind. As a producer, you always have to be up to date with current trends, you always have to improve your skills whether it’s mixing, production or if you play a musical instrument.
2. Be patient: Over the years I’ve realized that being in the music industry requires a lot of patience. It may take you years to sell your first beat, or generate your first $100 as a producer. And the more you get into this world, the more you understand how slow this is. You may get your first placement, but it can take months, or even years for that song to see the light of day. That’s why you have to be patient if you want to pursue music.
3. Networking: A good friend of mine once told me that networking is key to growing within the industry. And it’s not as difficult as it may seem, nowadays you can connect with anyone around the world. Of course, trying to connect with world-class artists is not the same as trying to connect with local artists. Start working with your artist friends, with local artists, and I assure you that you will achieve many things. It’s also very important to be present on social media, even if we don’t want to. I’ve known many successful cases of beatmakers who have had great placements just by uploading videos of their beats, and they didn’t have big numbers and they weren’t famous. Being present on social media can help you connect with more people and reach more people who might like your work.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents always exposed me to musical environments. And that has helped me form my musical tastes and music itself.
My father is a very well-known musician in my town. Since I was little, I always went to his shows. He also had a varied taste in music, we could be listening to rock from the 90s, and then move on to listening to popular music from Venezuela. It was always an environment of very varied music. Also, being surrounded by different musical instruments, I learned to play guitar, piano and percussion since I was part of different groups since I was little. My parents have helped form my taste for music, that’s why today I am a music producer.
I think that was one of the most impactful things for me, since they made me what I am today and I don’t regret anything.
