We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Joey Krulock. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Joey below.
Hi Joey, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
A lot of work. I have been working on my inner self all throughout my journey here in LA. It’s funny, I grew up very confident and outspoken. I loved to make people laugh. That changed at a young age…I don’t specifically know when but I stopped talking, I lost confidence, and I withdrew from people. I think the world has a way of doing that to us. It can try to knock us over and push us down. If we aren’t aware of this I think it can really lead us down a dark path. I am grateful to have the awareness and wherewithal to have continued climbing the mountain. I push myself to do things that are uncomfortable, like singing in front of people, dancing, or even talking with a stranger. That is how I have developed the new found confidence that I have today.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a filmmaker. I love making films. I direct, I act, I film, and I edit. It fuels me and I have the most energy when I am creating with this art form.
I am most recently entirely focused on building an audience on YouTube. I have been making films frequently for the past 3 years and have a backlog to consistently post onto YouTube. My plan is to build an audience on the platform and garner a community of people who love my work. I want to partner this with another platform like Patreon so I can pay people well and make sure everyone feels valued.
I post weekly and if you would like to check my channel out and subscribe I would be oh so grateful 🙂 You can just search my name, Joey Krulock, and you will find the channel.
I took some time off from creating and I was getting bored. I felt as though someone should be finding me, reaching out to me, and getting me work. I got tired of this way of thinking. I am back on MY path to become who I want to be. I am manifesting this next chapter of my life. What a wonderful time we live in, where anyone can create and share their art with the world. Beautiful.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities that have been most impactful on my journey are openness, kindness, and presentness.
Being open to opportunities, people, experiences, feelings…these have all expanded my universe beyond anything I could have ever imagined. I find that the more open I am…the more open my world is. Kindness is also key. As a filmmaker, I truly believe that at a certain level, kindness trumps skill. You are working very closely with folks on a film set. If someone is treating others with a negative energy, EVERYONE feels this. It doesn’t matter if they are the “best” in the world…if they are not kind towards others, in my opinion, it makes the process less fun. I like having fun haha.
My best advice to those early on their journey is to talk, learn, and do you best to understand EVERYONE. I think one of the better skills that I have is that I can understand where people are coming from. I think it allows for a greater depth of storytelling and art.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
Yes. Not quitting YouTube. YouTube is a slow burn. It can be a challenge to gain an audience on the platform but I am doing it. Slowly but surely. I have to go to bed telling myself mantras. I am making money off of YouTube, I have a large audience on YouTube, I am creating with people I love! It is a challenge…but who doesn’t like a challenge? If it was easy…I probably wouldn’t be doing it 🙂
