Meet Joey Rodriguez

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Joey Rodriguez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Joey below.

Joey, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

Like a lot of people who provide a service for others the idea of “Am I good enough to even provide this service let alone charge for it?” came up a lot. I spent a good 10 years doing tarot readings for friends, family and strangers online. I think starting at such a young age (13) also played a part in it. Finally my friend Leah told me that there was a shop looking for a tarot reader and she really pushed me to apply for the job. The interview included a tarot reading for my future employer. I’ll be honest in my opinion the reading felt clunky. Definitely not my best work but the woman I’d later come to work for (Tsuna) expressed her satisfaction and hired me on the spot. That first month of reading for clients taught me so many things about how I should conduct my practice. All the anxieties that come with divining for a client showed themselves to be my own insecurities and nothing else. All of my clients were happy, no one came back with complaints or accosted me. My boss was happy and so was I. In short in order to overcome the imposter syndrome you have to shut out all the noise in your head and just go for it with everything you’ve got.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

My Name is Joey, I am the person behind Cosmonaut Tarot. I do weekly general readings on my instagram account @cosmonauttarot for anyone interested in taking a look. Besides the general readings I post, I offer one on one consultations virtually or in person if you’re local. I also do free one question readings on my instagram account from time to time for those who can’t afford my rates or are just interested to know how my readings go. I got into tarot when I was 13. My mother was the one who introduced me to this practice and it’s her I attribute to nurturing my love for the occult. When it comes to tarot I find my consults have more to do with what my client needs to hear rather than what they want. Of course we can hone in on specific situations but I start the consult off with a general reading before we dive into specifics so we can get a feel for where the client is at mentally/spiritually. often I show up as the person the client needs at the time of their reading. Whether it be an empathetic ear, a friend to confide in or at times being the individual that has to give the tough love they’ve been lacking. I pride myself in my honesty. My readings don’t come with extra frills or theatrics. You’re here for a service. If you’ve paid for my time it’s now my priority that you’re taken care of within my abilities to do so.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I implore anyone looking to get into this to STUDY. Consume as much research material as possible. For me 78 degrees of Wisdom by Rachael Pollack has been my bible. If you’re new to divination you need a guide and often we don’t have physical mentors at our disposal so the book is going to be your teacher for the first bit of your journey. After that we proceed into the practice of intuition. That’s a muscle that gets worked out the more you consult this oracle. I recommend meditating. Your mental fortitude is going to help you develop your confidence and your ability to read. Finally, in my opinion a good reader is always mindful of the amount of trust that is being handed to you as their consultant. People are making life decisions based off of your advice. Do not abuse that trust. Be ethical, professional and compassionate. If you take anything from this those three things will carry you wherever you choose to go with tarot.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?

Someone who comes in open to anything happening within the confines of the reading. Some advice doesn’t apply until later on maybe even months after a reading. When I get a client who asks me if they can record our reading or has a pen and paper my heart sings. Depending on how much time you book with me readings can be long and contain a lot of different information. Someone who is prepared is investing not only in me with their money but they’re investing in their future self.
