We recently connected with Johanna Snyder and have shared our conversation below.
Johanna , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
In my opinion to have creativity is to have passion in what you are doing with your business and your brand. For me, mentality is everything and I fight the fatigue of letting my business stay neutral and in the same gear for too long. I am always saying what is next? how can I elevate? what can I produce? What can I bring to my customers? I am old fashioned and will always be a paper and pencil kinda girl, so I write down all my visions, color schemes and ideas and just lay it out there for me to see it visually. Another great tip I could give is to be with nature, when I am outside or by water I feel like mind clears and that is where a lot of ideas start flowing. You really need a neutral and grounding space to allow creativity to flow, same with good music, essential oils and natural sunlight.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Myself and my husband Chef Justin Snyder own a European inspired cafe and specialty market in Indian Wells, Ca. named Baby’s Marché. The meaning of our cafe name is unique and in my opinion charming, my husband calls me “Baby” as my nickname and wanted to name the cafe after me and Marché is market in French. The reason for the our cafe being European inspired is because we go to Europe a couple times a year and really just fell in love with the culture and and the way of living and of course the best part which is the food. Food quality is very important to us and we wanted to bring that to the desert, we are seed oil free and cook with the highest quality in ingredients but also brining in a lot of flavor. Our cafe also has a butcher counter with the best meats including game meats and house-made butters/sauces and we have a retail section where we carry so many amazing products including my skincare line and home aromatherapy line from By JS The Brand.
We also have an amazing matcha bar and cafe bar and we are the only cafe in the desert that serves raw milk, raw milk was a must to carry when we built the drink bar! the lavender cloud matcha is a must have if you come visit!
What I can say is when you come visit Baby’s Marché you are greeted with hellos, smiles and treated like family because that is what I wanted for our cafe. I wanted that sense of community and kindness and I am so proud that we have that at our cafe.
My dream was to open a European inspired cafe and to say that dream became a reality is just amazing to me. I truly feel grateful every single day that my husband and I built such an incredible place.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Customer service – Knowing how to interact with guests and treating guests with more kindness than just a transaction, it’s about the community aspect.
2. Traveling – Living in different countries and visiting different countries has helped understand the cultures and the way of living. It helped shaped our cafe with being European inspired.
3. Mindfulness – Allows me to be open to feedback and criticism which allows me to better myself in my business.
A piece of advice I would give is to have humility and discipline. Do not let pride get in the way of your business/brand. Wake up, do the work, be grateful and always do something to give back to your community. Always find a way to improve and when you feel like you are at the top of your game, stay calm and humble.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I am overwhelmed I stop doing work because they my work gets sloppy. I take a step back (Not on my phone) and I go outside, I meditate or I go for a workout to clear my mind and then I get back to it.
If you don’t allow yourself these self-care breaks for your mental health you can easily burn out and just become exhausted. Creating a healthy routine that is still disciplined is good and healthy for you. I have done the whole 2 hours of sleep and work all day type of schedule and it is not fun in the long run. You need to take care of your mental health in order for your business and brand to succeed.
