Meet John Aquino

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful John Aquino a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

John, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

At six years old, I had my first encounter with resilience in the most unexpected way—getting lost in Boracay. It was a perfect day on the island, the sun sparkling on the turquoise waves and the soft, white sand calling to my sense of adventure. My family was close by, enjoying the paradise, but I was too curious to stay still. I wandered into the water, letting the gentle waves carry me as I played.

By the time I realized how far I’d gone, the beach around me looked unfamiliar. I turned to find my family, but they were nowhere in sight. Strangely, I didn’t feel panic—just a quiet resolve to find my way back (much like getting lost at a grocery store, wandering the aisles, knowing I’d find my way back). I started walking along the shore, thinking the house must be nearby, but the more I walked, the less certain I became.

I wandered through unfamiliar streets until I ended up near a bustling local market. It was there that a kind lady noticed me, a small, unbothered child amidst the chaos. She asked where I was from, and I explained, calmly giving her my name and age. Taking me by the hand, she walked me to the local radio station where they were able to make an announcement of a lost child.

By sheer luck, my mom was listening to the radio at that very moment. When she heard my name, she raced to the station, finding me sitting there patiently. Her tears of relief mixed with my nonchalant grin, and the story of my adventure became a family classic.

Fast forward years later, I faced a different kind of “getting lost”—choosing a path that didn’t align with my family’s expectations. When I decided to pursue a career in fashion, it wasn’t exactly met with enthusiasm. One day (a week before leaving for college), as I was about to go downstairs, I overheard two of my family members in the kitchen. “Do you really think Paolo will make it?” she asked skeptically. “That won’t really make much income. He’s going to really struggle.”

I didn’t confront them. Instead, I quietly walked back upstairs, their doubt becoming fuel for my determination. I poured everything I had into my studies, eventually graduating and landing a coveted internship with Calvin Klein in New York City. I proved to myself and to them that I could succeed.

Though I didn’t stay in fashion, I realized my calling was to be a trailblazer. When I ventured into fitness, that’s where I started to discover my power, voice, and authenticity. Over the years, I continued to hone in my craft and evolving the experience I wanted to provide to anyone who stepped into my class—a sense of challenge that will build confidence and ownership of their authenticity. I reflected on the impact I’ve made and continue to do which is how The John Experience was created into a brand. Some might find it ridiculous that I would create my brand into a business, but at the end of the day, this is me trusting that I offer something different.

Through it all, I’ve learned to push past judgment and doubt, charting a course that aligns with my happiness and success. From getting lost as a child in Boracay to navigating career challenges, I’ve always trusted my inner compass. Resilience isn’t just about surviving—it’s about thriving, even when others don’t believe you can.

In the end, I’ve defined my own success, proving that the greatest adventures—whether on a beach or in life—start when you trust yourself to find the way.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

The John Experience (TJE) was born from a simple yet powerful idea: to create moments that foster connection through fitness, apparel, and events. It’s more than a brand—it’s a journey, a reflection of resilience, and a celebration of what happens when you believe in yourself.

For the past six years, I’ve been a group fitness instructor, specializing in cycle and yoga. From the first class I ever taught, I knew there was something magical about the energy in the room—the music, the lights, and the unspoken bond between instructor and students. Teaching cycle, in particular, has allowed me to express myself in ways I never imagined. Every playlist I create, every beat drop, and every word of encouragement is carefully designed to spark something in my riders.

The most exciting thing about creating an experience in a cycle class is the transformation that happens in just 45 minutes. It’s not just about the sweat or the sprints; it’s about the connection. The room becomes a safe space to push boundaries, find joy, and reset. When riders walk out of the room, they carry that energy with them into their day—a ripple effect of positivity.

TJE is built on this ethos: it’s fresh, fun, and for everyone. No matter your fitness level or background, the goal is to make you feel seen, empowered, and inspired.

But this dream didn’t come easily. TJE was created during a challenging chapter in my life. I found myself unemployed, facing uncertainty, and grappling with doubt. It was in that space of vulnerability that I began to trust myself—the gifts I had, the experiences I could provide, and the impact I could make. Slowly but surely, TJE became more than an idea; it became a mission.

Looking ahead, The John Experience is about more than just classes or apparel. In time, TJE will grow to mentor and uplift new instructors, helping them find their voice and confidence in the fitness world. It will also serve as a platform to collaborate with local creatives—artists, musicians, and visionaries—to curate events that are not only memorable but transformational.

The John Experience isn’t just about fitness—it’s about fostering connection, celebrating individuality, and creating a space where everyone belongs. Whether it’s in the spin room, wearing TJE apparel, or attending one of our events, the goal is the same: to make every experience unforgettable.

Because when you trust yourself and believe in the power of what you bring, you create something truly extraordinary. That’s The John Experience… that’s TJECLUB.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

When I think about what shaped my path to creating The John Experience, three qualities stand out: empathy, joy, and adaptability. They’ve been my guiding lights, helping me connect with others, create memorable moments, and navigate life’s uncertainties.

Empathy has been at the heart of my work. In every fitness class, it’s about more than the workout—it’s about understanding people’s needs and creating a space where they feel seen and supported. Connection makes the experience.

Joy is the spark that transforms the ordinary into unforgettable. Whether it’s a perfectly timed song or a moment of shared energy in class, joy leaves a lasting impression. When you bring joy into your work, people remember how it made them feel.

Adaptability has been key to my growth. My journey hasn’t been linear, but embracing change has allowed me to evolve. Taking risks and pivoting has taught me that every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow.

My advice? Give yourself time to bloom. In moments of uncertainty, trust that things are happening for you, even if you can’t see it yet. Lean into connection, find joy in what you do, and embrace change. Your journey will unfold in its perfect time.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

One moment stands above all others: their decision to sacrifice everything we had in the Philippines to move to Texas for a better opportunity back in 1998. At 6 years old, that was my first time on a plane and I vividly remember getting my wings pin. That choice not only shaped my future but also instilled in me values that continue to guide my life.

For nearly two years, my mom raised five kids on her own (working overnights at the hospital) while my dad supported from oversees. Her strength and positivity during those years were nothing short of remarkable. Despite the challenges, she approached every situation with grace and determination, teaching me the power of empathy and resilience. She showed me that no matter how hard life gets, staying kind and finding joy in the little things can carry you through.

When my dad joined us, he demonstrated the value of hard work and what it means to provide for those you love. I watched him dedicate his life to his work, often putting in long hours without complaint. From him, I learned the importance of independence and the satisfaction that comes from earning your own way.

Their sacrifices and example gave me more than just a new life in Texas—they gave me the tools to succeed. My mom’s unwavering spirit taught me to lead with heart, and my dad’s dedication taught me the value of perseverance. Together, they showed me what it means to give your all for something bigger than yourself.

The lessons they’ve taught me continue to shape the way I live, work, and connect with others. Their sacrifices weren’t just about creating opportunity—they were about planting seeds of empathy, resilience, and work ethic that will stay with me forever.
