We caught up with the brilliant and insightful John Butera a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
John, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I have always wanted to entertain in some way. In college, at St. John’s University, I was on the radio as a dj and sports broadcaster, reporter on the college TV, and writer for the newspaper. During and after college, i was at WFAN. After college, I worked at WRCN as promotion and marketing director, while being the morning show funny man.
I took a break, but I always knew I wanted to entertain again. I was a property manager, then opened a pizzeria with my wife.
We came up with the idea of a dinner comedy show. Being we only knew a couple of comedians, I also performed. I fell in love with entertaining all over again. 11 years, and well over 1,000 shows later, I’m a nationally touring stand up comedian. I have also become an active actor in many feature films and commercials.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Besides my comedy shows and acting, I truly love organizing fundraiser comedy shows and helping organizations raise money. I work with many organizations, charities and youth groups. I also do fire department comedy shows, and work closely with the Anne V Graziani Fund.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Just be honest, and work hard. Be truthful with everyone. Most importantly, help who you can, but don’t give up who you are!
What are you focused on?
I’m always looking for more venues, and clubs to work with. I try to think of creative ways to find them.
I’ve been lucky to use my past relationships to help. I have found some new venues, always looking for more.
