Meet John Crum

We were lucky to catch up with John Crum recently and have shared our conversation below.

John, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
I love what I do. Making my art, putting my ideas onto canvas, and connecting with viewers gives me the strength and determination to keep going.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
As an artist, I strive to develop paintings that tell a story, be it hidden or quite obvious. Hidden images within painting make viewing exciting every time you look at it. Capturing those personal moments that have made a fond memory or lasting impression is what I strive to achieve. A painting should evoke thought, awaken a memory, or spark an idea.

I recently had the opportunity to be the featured artist on Hilton Head Island. I wanted to have all new works to create a show that would leave an impression with the viewers. I worked day and night for 5 months, creating 30 new works that had never been seen. Opening night was an incredible time for me, watching the reactions and speaking with old and new friends about my work. I hope to repeat the show again in two years.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Curiousity, I am always seeking the how and why of something.

Pure enjoyment of the process, from the spark of an idea, the quick tiny thumbnail sketch to remember the moment, and to full size paintings. I always have that tingling feeling and must keep on creating.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

The pandemic closed galleries that were representing me. Getting back into a gallery is very difficult at this time in my career.

First, in my opinion and experience, the galleries are looking for young artists. Even though I have the spirit of a 20 year old with 52 years of experience it is getting more difficult.

Secondly, if you are seeking representation, be consistent. My style is very recognizable with a bold technique and color pallette. However, my subject matter changes between fantasy landscapes and whimsical figurative. A series for me usually consists of 3-4 pieces before I move on.

Lastly, I go into my studio every day, even when not inspired to paint. I find going in and just being there, organizing my paints, brushes, files, listening to my playlist, prepping canvas, cleaning… whatever, as long as it’s art related. Before you know it you’re inspired to paint again.
