Meet John Lopez

We recently connected with John Lopez and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have John with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

I grew up on a ranch in South Dakota where hard work is the only way to get things done.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I create one-of-kind sculptures from recycled farm equipment/ scrap iron. I love all the varieties of shapes when it comes to manufactured parts and pieces. Dakota is overflowing with old scrap piles that are begging to be picked through.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I think my resilience has finally paid off. When I first started sculpting in clay and casting my work in bronze my work didn’t stand out, but now using scrap iron my work seems to have touched a nerve with the public. So you really have to stick with it to make it in the art world

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?

I found it beneficial to concentrate a strength or interest and really go for it. Develope that skill as far as you can. I have other skills but I really push on my strengths.
