We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful John Tague. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with John below.
John, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I’ve had great acting teachers throughout my life who recognized my talent, nurtured it, and gave me a safety net to fall back on when I failed. Through repetition in my craft, I developed confidence in my work. The more I trained the better I got. When my work was tested in professional gigs, and the response was good, it increased my confidence and self-esteem exponentially. It made me hungrier for more work and experience. The key is repetition.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a professional working actor in Hollywood. I grew up in Chatham Township New Jersey where I started as a bass guitarist in rock bands and switched to acting in college. I’ve been acting for over 30 years in Films, Television, web series, and Commercials. I received my BA in Theatre Arts at High Point University in North Carolina. I moved to New York City in 1992 to pursue acting and further my training. I studied with the legendary Terry Schreiber while booking film and television gigs around the city. My first break came when I was cast in the lead role in the feature film Living and Dining alongside Academy Award winner Maureen Stapleton. I then moved to Los Angeles in 2001 where I have been acting steadily in various shows like Lucifer, Light as a Feather, American Horror Story, The Blacklist, CSI, and many more. I’m currently represented by Aqua Talent and Torque Entertainment. In 2015 I created, wrote, directed, and starred in the multi-award-winning winning web-series The Rolling Soldier. I’m currently married to my wife Claire Hartley who is the owner of Rising Lotus Yoga in Sherman Oaks and we have a 17-year-old daughter, Nova, who is preparing to study Musical Theatre in college.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Being a musician was very helpful for me as an actor because I was able to use my sense of timing and rhythm in my work, which is critical.
Studying Martial Arts gave me a sense of how my body works and how to defend myself. It gave me tons of confidence. I’m a 1st Dan Black Belt in Shotokan Karate.
Reading. I became a voracious reader which expanded my vocabulary, mind, and taught me the keys to storytelling.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m always looking for passionate and fearless film industry people to work with. I love collaborating on independent projects and bringing them to life. I can be reached at john@johntagueactor.com
