We were lucky to catch up with John Winlock Jr recently and have shared our conversation below.
John, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Where do I get my resilience from? I believe the greatest test to this was being homeless with a son about to be born and nowhere to raise him made me eager to change this narrative, so I did what I felt I had to do to make it possible to provide a safe and thriving environment for him, the brother, and two sisters that came along later in our lives—becoming a convicted felon in the process and being denied what I at the time believed to be life-changing job opportunities for me and my family, because I couldn’t pass a background check. I refused to accept this as my future and kept pushing forward, finding my way.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a Certified Personal Trainer, Nutrition, and Wellness Coach and I help people improve their relationships with food and their bodies. The thing that gets me excited about my work is the overall positive change that happens within the lives of the people I help. What makes this special is that most people come to me looking to improve the way their body looks and/or moves but end up truly loving and accepting themselves with an entirely different perspective.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three things I find to have had the biggest impact on my journey are my consistent desire to learn more within my profession. Learning new inventions, methods, and successful ways to practice those methods have kept me capable of serving my clients and my community’s needs. Another I would have to say is patience. Patience has allowed me to plan and build more effectively and efficiently carefully. The third one is the determination to be successful. Things don’t always go the way we want or foresee however being determined to be successful doesn’t allow me to settle inside of those spaces but helps me maneuver around my shortcomings and turn them into wins and gains.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest area of improvement is being open-minded. Being able to absorb information, analyze it, and then see how it may or may not have a positive impact today or in the future goes a long way. Some ideals may not effectively work today but may have a vital role tomorrow. Being open-minded allows me to deep-think on these areas and over time build on these ideas and bring them to life when the time is right.
