Meet Johnnie & Jaylon Gordon

We recently connected with Johnnie & Jaylon Gordon and have shared our conversation below.

Johnnie & Jaylon , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

Johnnie: As cliche as it may sound, our confidence comes from simply having faith in God. See, Jaylon and I knew at an early age this was our calling, therefore we learned to operate in the boundaries of, “What God has for you is for you.’ I remember I was like six or seven and I auditioned for Ride Along, when we got to the car my mom told me to whisper a prayer over my audition. I looked at her and said, “God, if it’s for me let it be.” My mom and Jaylon started laughing, but I was serious. That prayer became the prayer Jaylon and I said after every audition, to this day. As we got older, we began to see how unorthodoxed things would happen in our career, which to us was another sign of, “This is your calling.” So yeah, our confidence and self-esteem comes from faith times work and the understanding of, “What God has for you is for you.” The no’s hit different, when you understand this. You have to have tough skin in the entertainment industry and this is how we maintain our thick skin.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Johnnie: Thank you for having us on your platform! Well, Jaylon and I have been acting since we were four and five years old. Although we’ve worked on some dope projects with some amazing talent, we’re best known for our roles on “BMF”‘ as Young Meech and Young Terry. I think it’s pretty dope that we’re, “Real life brothers playing real life brothers on screen.” We’re also Christian Hip Hop Recording Artist, known as the JMGBOYZ. We learned about and fell in love with this genre on the set of our first movie, I believe we were five and six at the time. After that, I told my parents I wanted to do music. Like they did with my desire to act, they decided to cultivate another dream. Jaylon and I dropped our first single at the age of seven and eight. The rest is history.

I think the dopest aspect of our journey is being able to walk alongside each other as we progress. I mean we’ve worked on several projects together, from our very first movie “A Christmas Blessing”, to our most recent roles on “BMF” and “Terror Lake Drive”. However, we’ve also booked solo roles and it was dope to sit back and watch Jaylon work his on screen magic and I’m sure he felt the same way, when I landed solo roles. The same aspect applies for our music career. Yes we’re on this journey together, but we get to root each other on as we progress and grow. Example, in late 2022 I started teaching myself to produce music and Jaylon was right there cheering me on. Fast forward to November 2024, we released our first self produced single, “THY KINGDOM COME”, which is available on all platforms, as of November 15, 2024. We have more exciting opportunities coming down the pipe line, so make sure y’all stay locked in with us.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Jaylon: I believe the most impactful qualities and skills for us was learning the importance of faith times work, understanding “what’s for you is for you”, and the importance of believing in yourself. I know when it comes to applying the skills I named it’s a lot easier said than done, especially in the entertainment industry where you hear more no’s than yes. My advice to anyone who’s taking that leap of faith to pursue their dream(s) is, don’t underestimate the power of faith times work, because you can believe in yourself and have all the faith in the world, but if you don’t put in the work nothing will ever come to fruition, because “Faith without work is dead”. So do the work and trust God’s timing/plan!

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

Johnnie: The most important thing our parents did for us was take action and cultivate our dreams. I was three years old when I told my mom, “I want to be a model man” and told my dad “I want to be IN the TV like Zach and Cody”, fast forward 16 years and we’re here talking to you all. My brother and I seriously wouldn’t be where we are if it wasn’t for our amazing parents. Looking back on that moment, they didn’t have to take action; they could’ve taken that moment lightly and kept moving throughout their day, instead they chose to listen to me. Our parents have invested time, money, and effort into our dreams simply because they believe in us, that alone is motivation. It was TRULY a labor of love that we’re forever grateful for. We love you mama and dad!

Jaylon: For me, the most impactful thing our parents done for us was choosing to believe in us, because some parents don’t believe in their child(ren) and because of that, they fail to cultivate their dreams.
