We recently connected with Johnny Blayz and have shared our conversation below.
Johnny, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I overcame imposter syndrome by focusing on results. Seeing the impact of my work in videography, marketing, and now Ikigai Media helped me trust my abilities and stay confident.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m the founder of Ikigai Media LLC, where I focus on videography, social media, and marketing. My goal is to help clients tell their stories through creative and impactful content while empowering them with the tools and knowledge to succeed on their own as well.
Right now, I’m also working on a personal project—a documentary about my late father, who was featured on 60 Minutes. I’ve been converting old Betamax tapes to MP4 files, which is a time-consuming but rewarding process as I uncover pieces of his story.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Watching a lot of movies to study storytelling, developing a fast turnaround with video editing, and learning from people on similar paths. For anyone starting out, I’d recommend immersing yourself in great award -winning work, practicing your craft regularly to improve speed and quality, and connecting with mentors or creators you admire to learn from their experiences; mine was a videographer named Peter Rigby.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
A book that played an important role in my development is The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer. It taught me the value of letting go of inner resistance and being present in the moment. One key takeaway was to observe my thoughts and emotions without attachment, which still helps me stay grounded and focused.
