We were lucky to catch up with Johnny Lee Stewart recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Johnny Lee, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I am the youngest of four children, which could have influenced my personality and sense of self in many ways. My mom and dad did a wonderful job cultivating an environment of support and celebration for all of us. We had to attend each other’s track meets, dance recitals, tennis matches, band concerts, and more. Let me tell you, it’s nearly impossible to lack confidence or self-esteem when you have a cheering squad behind you at every endeavor. Beyond this foundation, I believe confidence and self-esteem are mostly developed behind the scenes. When I know I’ve done my very best, prepared thoroughly, and presented my project with passion, the outcome is out of my hands. “Let go and let God” gives me the freedom to enjoy every moment without the undue pressure of focusing on my ‘self.’
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’ve always had an interesting interplay between my left and right brain. On one hand, I’m analytical, straightforward, and business-minded. On the other, I find joy and inspiration in the arts through dance, singing, acting, and more. I earned two degrees from the University of Colorado at Boulder: a Bachelor of Science in Business HR Management and a Bachelor of Arts in Dance. I spent many years in live entertainment as a member of Actors Equity, performing in stage musicals and working for Stiletto Entertainment on Holland America Line. During the COVID-19 shutdown, I took the opportunity to focus on vocal recording. Over the past year, I released a Christmas EP and two singles on all streaming platforms, and most excitingly, produced and shot two music videos for the singles!
My main interest lies in the intersection of movement and analytics, so I’m pursuing official certification in Movement Analysis through the Laban Institute in NYC. The language of Labanotation and Bartenieff Fundamentals clinically and clearly addresses movement patterns and their efforts, transforming the way I approach business. I plan to merge these two worlds, coaching individuals on non-verbal communication. From Broadway to the boardroom, I’ll help others understand how their body tells their story—and how they can use movement to achieve their professional and personal goals.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three most impactful qualities that guide me today are faith, curiosity, and endurance.
My Christian faith has sustained me through both difficult and joyful times. While it can be scary to recognize that some things are within my control and others are not, I trust in an all-loving God who always has my back.
I also believe it’s essential to stay curious. Many of my songs and movement projects have sprung from a random thought or question. By following those seemingly small inquiries, I’ve discovered new and innovative forms of sound and communication.
Finally, life is not a sprint—it’s a marathon. I remind myself of this when I become overly focused or anxious. Sometimes, constructive rest is just as important as the work itself. Being tenacious and hardworking is important, but striking a balance between grit and sustainability is the ultimate goal.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always looking for collaborators in music and movement! In the music world, I’m actively seeking a co-writer to help me complete my first original EP. If you’re interested, please get in touch through my YouTube channel or Instagram!
Additionally, I’m in the early stages of developing a written and online curriculum for Authentic Movement in Business. If you have experience in publishing or website design and would like to be part of the team, I’d love to hear from you!
