Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Johnny Majestic. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Johnny, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I grew up feeling like an outsider. Being a full-fledged rocker kid at 10 years old meant I didn’t listen to the same music as everybody else, and I didn’t dress the same. Plus I think I was, and definitely still am, a lil weird. That made me into a pretty shy and closed-off person for most of my time at school. I just couldn’t relate a lot of the time and I think that made me get picked on a lot.
Over time, I think you realize that whatever your uniqueness is, can actually be the source of your confidence. Not your handicap. So now I embrace it, and I think that’s 100% what matters. Not caring what other people think for one- frees you of caring about any negativity coming to get you. And also makes you find people in your life that you authentically resonate with, which I would say is who I have around me right now.
Of course there will always be SOMEBODY judging you. But the secret is that it really doesn’t matter! Let it amuse you to the fullest.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Hello! My name is Johnny Majestic, and I think I’ve been designated to be make art in the world (haven’t really found much else I enjoy or am as good at haha). I’m a glam rock/pop musician, currently fronting my solo project in Los Angeles and touring through a couple of other cities along the way. When I’m not writing and producing my own songs, I also compose music for various forms of media like Video Games, TV Shows and Commercials on the side. I’ve also directed a good amount of music videos for myself and other artists, which I really enjoy.
I started performing with my solo act “Johnny Majestic” in 2022, and this year we’ve already done a run of shows in Europe (Berlin, Vienna and Prague), as well as a tour of South California. I also just made it to a televised episode of American Idol after being scouted out and doing a bunch of zoom pre-auditions. Wasn’t sure what to expect at first, but it ended up being a super fun and educating experience.
The essence of my work is to create worlds that are quite different, and more whimsical than the ordinary world. I’m a huge fan of fantasy, and love bridging a gap between reality and colorful imagination.
I would say that the majority of my music is a grand and melodic modern twist on Glam of both the 70’s and 80’s. But I love injecting the music with any, and every genre that I think is cool.
I’m a huge fan of artists that combine sounds in this way- Whether it be David Bowie, Dorian Electra or 100 Gecs. Why put yourself in a box when there’s so many boxes to explore? Why not mix the sound of ABBA with Power Metal and intimate Bossa Nova interludes in one song? Or drop tuned metal with shimmery mainstream pop?
I write and produce my songs, along with the help of some ultra talented producers and co-writers from all over the world on occasion. One of my goals in Los Angeles right now is to connect with as many like-minded artists, and keep creating lots of work from my home base.
I have an EP coming out in the next few months, and releasing a couple singles on the way before it drops. The next one is called “EVERYBODY LIKES ME!”, check it out when you get the chance!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
One thing, in terms of music, is to always keep your antenna open to new ideas. I’ve trained myself to run to my voice memos app or laptop whenever I get an idea to put it down somewhere. You accumulate a huge vault that makes you develop your own style over time, plus it keeps your head fresh and ready to jump into creating any time.
I would also say that surrounding yourself with a lot of people who are better than you at certain things, whether it be peers or mentors, can move you forward way faster than if you were figuring everything out on your own. I would say that every great musician, producer, or writer I’ve worked with in my life has probably inspired me. It’s also super important for me personally to have people who I can depend on working along with me, the closest relationships in my life are people who are always helping me get to where I strive to be in my career, and who I’m always comfortable reaching out to for opinions or advice. GOD BLESS THOSE PEOPLE!
Lastly, just really figuring out your style and sound. What is it that you want out of this? What feelings or atmosphere do you want to evoke in the people watching and listening?
I spent years focusing on what the right and wrong ways to do things are. And for the most part, that’s just a waste of time when you want to convey a message. Delve deep into what you want to be, and your path will be a lot less intimidating.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
Finishing a mix right now. The hardest thing is always to polish and finalize a piece of work. I’ve spent so much time writing notes on songs and videos that it’s hard to count. Either master all the aspects yourself, or find someone who’s willing to bear with you in the process of finishing something!
