We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Johnny Simero a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Johnny , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
For me, resilience was born in the moments I thought I couldn’t get back up. This past year, I lost my dog Rocky, went through a car accident, and watched some relationships fall away in ways that hurt. It would have been easy to stop — to stay in grief, or self-blame, or exhaustion. But what I found was that every loss also uncovered a new layer of strength in me.
Resilience, for me, isn’t about being tough or pretending things don’t affect me. It’s about letting myself feel the weight, and then choosing to rise anyway. I rise through my practices — meditation, Kundalini yoga, qi gong, even journaling with the universe. I rise through creating — turning grief into projects like The Journal of Joy and the non-profit “Shine the Brightest,” so my pain becomes something that can heal others too. I rise through trusting that I don’t have to chase what’s meant for me — it will find me when I stand in my truth.
Resilience, I’ve learned, isn’t a single moment. It’s a rhythm. Every time life knocks me down, I get back up — softer in heart, stronger in spirit, and more certain that my story is still being written.”

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Right now my focus is on sparking joy and building community through creativity. I’m the founder of Shine the Brightest, a nonprofit that creates spaces where people — especially the next generation — can grow through artistic education and compassion. One of the projects within Shine the Brightest is the Rising Star Academy of Performing Arts, a 1–8 concept designed to nurture young artists, leaders, and dreamers.
I’m also the author of The Journal of Joy, a guided creative journey that helps people reflect, release, and rediscover their own inner spark. Alongside that, I created the Johnny Doodlebright coloring book series, designed to bring creativity and joy to children and adults alike. It’s been amazing to see readers connect with these works in their own way — they’re more than pages, they’re experiences of transformation and play.
In addition, I’m developing Simero’s, a soulful Italian food brand rooted in the idea that “one bite, and you’re family,” and the Hollywood Container Hotel concept, which blends heritage with innovation. These projects are all part of the same vision: to create experiences — whether through a book, a classroom, a meal, or a space — that bring people together and remind them of their own light.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Resilience. Life will test you in ways you don’t expect. What matters is not avoiding struggle, but learning to rise again with softness and strength. My advice: don’t run from challenges — let them shape you, but not define you.
2. Trust. For years I thought I had to chase, prove, and overextend. My biggest shift has been learning to trust timing, trust the universe, and trust myself. Things align when you stop forcing and start flowing.
3. Creativity. Creativity is not just art — it’s the ability to reimagine your life, to see possibility where others see endings. My advice: make space for play, journaling, or any practice that lets your inner voice speak. That spark can guide your entire journey.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Absolutely. My vision has always been bigger than one person, and collaboration is at the heart of Shine the Brightest and everything I’m building. These projects come from my heart, and I’m looking forward to connecting with others who feel these visions too. I want to work with people who value creativity, compassion, and community — whether that’s educators, artists, nonprofit partners, hospitality and food collaborators who resonate with Simero’s, or even funders and investors who believe in legacy and impact.
I believe in working with those who are aligned, not forced — people who understand that what we’re creating isn’t just business, it’s a movement, a story, and a way to shine forward together.
