Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jojo Turkson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jojo , appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
To God be the glory, that i am able to keep doing what i do. One way that i have been able to keep my creativity alive and going is “always creating”.
I believe that creativity never ends, the more you keep at it the better you become. By so doing it has kept me on the right truck by always applying everything that comes to mind as an idea into practice.
Sometimes, i get a creative idea in my dream, whiles driving and seeing something on the road and by just talking to someone about another thing.
As an artist and a creator, i never take these special moments for granted because i never know when i might get those ideas again.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a professional photographer and graphic designer living in Chicago. I was born and raised in Ghana in a very small nuclear family. Married to a Cosmetologist wife who specializes in hair and makeup. Father of 2 beautiful children. My photography interest started in church when our pastor got a small camera for the media team to use during church services. Fortunately the camera landed in my hands because no one wanted to do that LOL. I began to shoot a few things for church and everyone loved it. A couple in church wanted me to use that camera to shoot their vow renewal and when they saw the photos they were amazed. Even though at that time i had no professional skill and/or touch to it. I then realized that i can learn more about photography and pursue it. I also prayed about it and God has been faithful since then. Now I’m a full time professional photographer and my passion is to always capture all the great moments in the life of any client that books me – whether it’s a Wedding, Birthday, Graduation or you just want to pamper yourself with a photoshoot. I also love the arts & media with my graphic design skills as well as connecting with new people. My belief is that, everyone should look within and pray, God can show you what he wants you to do in this life. Sometimes we follow the trends and do what others are doing but wouldn’t be our passion and calling. Also identify what you’re passionate about and do it with all your might and God will bless it.
My goal is to make all my clients satisfied and celebrate with them at the end of the day. Whether is a wedding, graduation or family portraits. I can remember a wedding I shot in the summer of 2019 under a very hot/humid weather. The couple had their ceremony outdoors, whiles guests were waiting under a heated tent some needed water and there was none. I remembered I had 2 large packs of 24 case water in my car and I quickly crabbed it for them. I could see the satisfaction and comfort in their faces. The couple were notified about it and they were very thankful. This actually set a great tone and comfort for the couple and I during their wedding. They were forever grateful for my kind gesture.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back 3 qualities that has been most impactful to me and what i do are patience, discipline and prayer. With these 3 combined anyone can achieve whatever goal they have in mind.
I believe in uniqueness. Being unique from what others are doing and keeping my style original and different for my clients. And also I believe in prayer because it’s been my backbone and support in this journey. I also do my very best to go above and beyond for my clients. It’s not just taking the shot but also everything that comes with it like; fixing the shoe lace of my client on site, given them water or a snack from my bag, helping them carry their extras stuff on site or even helping them with parallel parking on the street 😉. Some of these things might seem weird but I believe that it makes my clients feel comfortable and appreciated.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My wife is my biggest fun and critic. Her insight in to everything that i do with her knowledge and ideas has really helped me to become who i am now.
I am very proud of her and i thank God for her
