We recently connected with Jolie Colon and have shared our conversation below.
Jolie, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
What makes me resilient is a blend of inherited strength and hard-earned grit: raised by a strong mother and a grandmother who rose from poverty with her head held high, I learned to carry myself with dignity, resourcefulness, and pride; when others said I couldn’t, I used their doubt as fuel to prove them wrong, turning setbacks into lessons, leaning on perseverance, practical problem-solving, and an unwavering commitment to honor my family’s legacy.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the owner of a luxury wedding and event planning business, along with a floral company, focused on creating beautiful, memorable moments for my clients. With a design background rooted in New York, I bring a keen eye for detail and creativity to every event, elevating dreams to the next level. Additionally, I am passionate about giving back to the community—I enjoy supporting nonprofit organizations by helping raise funds, communicate their missions, and increase awareness of the important needs many people face.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The journey that brought me here was shaped by several key influences: a lifelong love of weddings since I was a little girl and a romantic heart that keeps me focused on meaningful moments; a deep passion for design and creating beautiful, styled parties; formative experience working as a project manager, which taught me organization, timelines, vendor coordination, and budgeting; and the lessons learned from family legacy and perseverance that built my resilience and work ethic.
Advice for those early in their journey
– Cultivate your passion: Work on small styled shoots or volunteer at events to build a portfolio and confirm what excites you.
– Learn fundamentals of design: Study color, composition, floristry basics, and event flow; take short courses or apprenticeships with designers you admire.
– Develop project-management skills: Practice creating timelines, checklists, budgets, and vendor contracts; use tools like spreadsheets, Asana, or HoneyBook.
– Build relationships: Network with vendors, venues, and mentors—reputation and referrals matter most in events.
– Start small and iterate: Take on varied projects to learn logistics, then refine your signature style.
– Practice client communication: Listen actively, set clear expectations, and present visual mockups to align vision.
– Invest in resilience and self-care: Balancing long hours and emotional work requires boundaries, rest, and reflection.
– Seek feedback and mentorship: Ask experienced planners for critiques and shadow them when possible.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I admire icons like Martha Stewart for their perseverance, impeccable taste, and ability to turn everything they touch to gold — that same commitment to beauty and excellence guides my work.
Who I’m looking to collaborate with
– Luxury venues and boutique hotels that value thoughtful design and elevated guest experiences.
– High-end florists, designers, and stylists who bring refined, inventive aesthetics.
– Talented photographers and cinematographers who capture moments with artistry and emotion.
– Couture dressmakers, bespoke tailors, and accessory designers who prioritize craftsmanship.
– Specialty vendors (lighting, furniture rental, stationery, pastry chefs) offering bespoke, high-quality products.
– Nonprofit organizations and community partners seeking elegant events to raise awareness and funds.
– Brands and creatives wanting curated, experiential activations or editorial shoots.
