We recently connected with Jonasia Cooper Licensed Cosmetologist and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jonasia Cooper, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I grew up in a single-parent household for part of my life, I saw my mom work her hardest to provide for my siblings and me. Long nights, tired, body aches, and even tears from the life we were living at the time. Seeing her overcome every obstacle and become who she is today is the motivation that I can do the same and even more, she’s truly made her floor my ceiling!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a Licensed cosmetologist who specializes in healthy hair care. I encourage my clients to take care and invest in their natural hair. Using plant-based products my goals are to achieve my client’s goals. With my educational background and experience, I perform necessary services that will help improve the look, feel, and health of my client’s hair. I’m passionate about what I do because I love to see women in my community start to love their natural hair and see it in another light. With my plant-based line releasing I plan to help my clients to achieve their goals more consistently at home and continue to keep their hair thriving in the chair.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The most important areas of knowledge are scalp care, ingredient knowledge, and style training. Scalp care because it’s essential to be able to cater to your client’s scalp needs and assess what’s going on if you see changes in their scalp. Ingredient knowledge is important to know which ingredients are causing issues with your client’s hair or even to recommend to improve the state of their hair. Lastly, styling it’s the make or break of a service a client will not care how knowledgeable you are if you cannot have them leave your chair looking beautiful. My advice for gaining these three important areas of knowledge and skill is to train under a very educated and experienced stylist and get the proper second education.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
A book that has played an important role in my development is the Holy Bible. This book is the most transformative book and the only self-help book you’ll need. It has taught me how to live in humility, to be selfless, to be bold, courageous, honest, and more. It changed me from being the person who sought the desires of this world to the desires of him, how to love myself and to love others, and most importantly that I’ll always have someone who loves me and will never leave me. The most valuable and impactful nuggets of wisdom will be found in the book of Proverbs.
