We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jonathan Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jonathan, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I found my purpose growing up in church. I always knew I was a giver or had a giving heart. So once I started cutting hair, it helped me to fulfill my purpose while also doing something that I love. There’s no better feeling than being able to bless someone and let them know God is real.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I joined the navy in 2013. I served on active duty for 11 years as an aviation mechanic. I separated in October of 2024. I started cutting hair in September of 2015 while on deployment. I instantly fell in love with the craft and how I made people feel. It was hard leaving the clientele I had established in Virginia to move to Houston, but it has been an amazing journey. I currently attend Mystros barber academy where I am almost finished with my 1000 hours. It was destined for me to be at this barber academy because it really allows me to be a cheerful giver and change some people’s lives, no matter how small. I plan on opening my own barber school that will offer college accredited business courses for those students who have entrepreneurship aspirations.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Firstly I want to say that God was behind it all. No matter if I never gave him the glory when it was due, it all belongs to him. I feel my passion and my work ethic are what really impacted my journey. I have been so dedicated to my craft. I’ve had to sacrifice family time to grow and it is nice to get that time back now. One piece of advice I can give is that if you are around others who are likeminded and in the same field as you, learn all you can from one another. Up until I moved here and started school, I had to learn everything on my own. Also, care about your craft. That will take you a long way.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Other than God, My wife and kids have been the most helpful. They allowed to me to pursue and perfect my passion. I know it took a toll on my wife taking care of the kids while I went to work in the navy, then came home and was a barber for the rest of the evening. I am so grateful.
