Meet Jonathan-dexter Albert

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jonathan-dexter Albert a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jonathan-Dexter, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

I believe it found me. I have an older sister who influenced me when we were younger. She used to love to write short stories and illustrations for those stories. We would compete with drawing as well. When I got older I fell in love with the bass guitar after attending a concert and my father seeing that bought me a bass the following week. Musicianship helped me to become a lot more detail oriented which is important for what I do and it crosses over through the arts. In filmmaking music and music choice is also very important so I naturally gravitated toward the art form. Both of these events started unexpected journeys in the arts for me.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I started off as a photographer. I really enjoyed taking photos of people and fashion. Photography is fulfilling in that as you are working, you get to meet new people and hear their stories. You get to be a part of some of the most important moments of peoples lives and contributing to life long memories that they will cherish. I have now grown into a filmmaker which I love even more because I feel with video you have more flexibility to tell your story. My goal these days is to grow into a media agency where myself and my fellow filmmakers can create amazing videos and stories for brands and people.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Being personable is huge. Being a kind person. People will hire the person that makes everyone feel good in the room over the most talented. You do have to know how to perform the job, however, if you aren’t pleasant to work with, you won’t get the call back.

Branding! Honestly, I branded myself heavy before I even knew what branding actually was. I would print my business cards and after every shoot have my clients hold it up in a photo. It got to a point where they couldn’t wait to take that photo and be showcased on my page and a part of the brand. It helped greatly in spreading the word on my brand.

Organization. At some point, being unorganized caused me to lose business. I decided to invest in a CRM (Client Management Software) so I can keep all communications centralized and so that I could automate some things.

I advise new business owners to get organized early and also to start building business credit immediately to set themselves up to be ready for the growth that could come in the future.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

I’ve been relying on social media to bring my clients and business. This year my goal is to be proactive and go after the clients I want and to try to lock in 4-5 consistent bigger clients. This would allow me to then beginning the early stages of becoming and agency by hiring some help. It can be challenging to find such clients but but I believe if I just stay consistent with the plan, it will work.
