Meet Jonathan Martin-Ives

We were lucky to catch up with Jonathan Martin-Ives recently and have shared our conversation below.

Jonathan, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I was on a film set, helping out with a friend’s short project. The whole atmosphere was electric! Needless to say, I caught the bug. I had developed a character that I would have loved to see in film, so I approached my director buddy, and he agreed to help me on two conditions. #1: I write a script. #2: I get the script copyrighted. So I wrote a script (never doing so before) and then paid, I think it was $67 for a copyright. I came back to my buddy, and he said….. “No..”

I can laugh about it now but was quite crushed and taken aback. As it turned out, to his credit, my story was a bit too overwhelming for him to take on. Undaunted however, I remembered what Richard Hatch told me once, “Never give up on your dreams…” I was able to collect a motley, but outstanding crew in April of 2022. The result was The Soul of St. Ives.

Since then, I have put together a few more shorts and have enter a few festivals. Nothing spectacular has yet to come from it, but it is a wonderful thing to finally pick up this dream that started when I was a teenager with a super 8mm camera making red yarn into laser beams. After finding out about Steven Spielberg’s efforts that paralleled my sci-fi childhood, I dedicated the local showing of The Soul of St. Ives to his March release of Firelight.

It is a huge ambition, but I would like Colorado Springs to be the next Hollywood, minus a great deal of the drama and difficulty in getting things made.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a film director and creator for RellianStorm LTD. I have been creating words and worlds for many decades through books, poetry, comics, and now film. Essentially, I wish to give the gift of ‘fun’. I would like for people to enjoy my content, minus agenda and drama that has become to ‘norm’. When I was growing up media of my sort, (sci-fi/fantasy) was there for pure enjoyment. I long for those days and hope to bring fun and enjoyment with my often-quirky brand of ‘B’ movie mayhem. I am in the works of starting a YouTube channel to explore all manner of random and weirdness.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Imagination 2. Drive
3. Romance (By this, I mean, long for that reality that you have created withing your mind-within yourself. Thirst to make
your dreams come true.)

As far as making films, I give this, as was given to me by Alex Lemay. Just do it. Make something, anything. Even if it is crap, just do it. Upload Davinci Resolve of the like and learn how to edit.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am always looking for other ‘indie’ folks to team up with or help out if I can. This pool that I have jumped into can tend to be filled with many ego-driven and self-serving entities. I know that sounds a bit harsh, but there is a reality that keeps creatives from helping or looking out for each other.
