We recently connected with Jonathan Nichols and have shared our conversation below.
Jonathan, thrilled to have you on the platform as I think our readers can really benefit from your insights and experiences. In particular, we’d love to hear about how you think about burnout, avoiding or overcoming burnout, etc.
I try to avoid burnout and keep a work-life balance by having my official business hours Monday – Thursday and do my best to take lunches between jobs. Also, scheduling time in for other activities on occasion. A scriptural principle that help me keep this train of thought is Ecclesiastes 4:6.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I got into professional mobile detailing to make it through the summer consistently during the 2-month break from driving school buses. I realized how many people need and appreciate a thorough detail that can be done at their home or business without needing to drop off or pick up their vehicle from a fixed location!
My focus is providing convenient mobile service while maintaining a high level of detailing consistency.
While thorough detailing can be tedious, I enjoy most the reactions from clients when they see their completed vehicle. Maybe it’s only an interior detail or maybe it’s a paint restoration with a ceramic coating, either way the smiles and satisfaction that ensue are priceless.
I currently offer a few different ceramic coating types, I’m soon adding another more robust product to our line-up: NanoPro Permanent Surface Solutions. It’ll be nice to offer this product line for its durability, intense gloss, and manufacturer support.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
3 Qualities that have helped me greatly are patience, honesty and a good work ethic. These are a mix of bible principles and upbringing from my parents that have helped.
For those starting their own service, patience is helpful in many ways. Keep in mind people pay for what they want. If you can provide a valuable service, consistently word will spread. Give it time, there’s no need to go into debt for advertising campaigns or having the fanciest products and equipment starting off.
Good work ethic is imperative. To prevent being overwhelmed with any detail job, take one step at a time, and before you know it the steps are completed and the finished result is awesome.
Honesty is valuable, as trust is what many relationships are based on, including business relationships with clients. If they cannot trust you to do a thorough job or treat them fairly, they will be less likely to refer you or use your service again.
So be honest, and be consistent. Even if your not the best in your business, every business is unique. And many people don’t need the best or cheapest service. They just expect to get what they paid for. Managing expectations is very helpful.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When feeling overwhelmed, I pause, review what my priorities and goals are, and then do what I can within reason, one thing at a time.
Also not to be underrated is asking for help. None of us specialize in everthying. So keep this in mind when you are trying to where the many hats of owning and operating a business.
