We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jonathan Sassen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jonathan below.
Jonathan, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I have had this since being a child it has come from my mother and “family always being told no I cannot have it I’m not allowed it I have to wait. From this, I always became inventive creative and super resilient. The word no to me is like magic. I will always find a way I’ve been told no by various bosses various investors, various sponsors and various business owners and consistently. I will always find a way and defy the odds.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a seasoned operator within Nightlife and Hospitality. This has taken me in many diverse directions, including fashion, nightlife events and concerts throughout my career. I have been Director of Nightlife at Atlantis Bahamas and I was the founder of Manchester, Fashion Week. Most recently I launched all the entertainment and events for the opening of the largest casino in Europe, City of Dreams.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
You can do something with nothing is the best thing I could always say to people never accept no as the final answer, never accept the final answer as the final answer. Everything in my life I have achieved as being because somebody said no, and this has led to the best achievements of my life within my own businesses by previous employers. When I first met my wife, she also said no, it was quite possibly the worst thing she could’ve said to me But it led to an amazing marriage
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
I’m a strong believer in knowing your position and becoming a force to be reckoned with. You hear stories of David Beckham practicing a million free kicks to become the best. Steve Jobs going over and over the design process until it was perfect and many others. You must always accept you can’t do everything and you must rely on teams of people. As a leader your role is to find a dream team. Find the right person for the right position and this is where you can really move mountains. It all depends on finding people with the right passion , the right integrity, and the right smile. I do not care for what qualifications a person has and what university they went to because, it all depends on there hustle , there passion, and there aura and work ethic. You can’t teach this , only life can teach you to be passionate and very good at what you do. Always remember try to be the best at one thing and one position and dominate. Your always part of a team if your a toilet cleaner or a CEO
