Meet Joo Yun Julia Kang

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joo Yun Julia Kang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Joo Yun Julia with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

I credit my work ethic to my parents, who immigrated from South Korea shortly after the Second World War. Growing up, I witnessed their resilience, humility, and relentless determination to build a life from the ground up. Their strength taught me the value of perseverance and integrity — qualities that continue to guide me in everything I do.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

My inspiration stems from a desire to create beauty that’s rooted in health, balance, and authenticity. I began my journey at the Aveda Institute in New York, where I learned that true beauty begins with care — for both the hair and the person. Over the years, I’ve specialized in brunettes and Asian hair textures, with a strong focus on scalp health and overall well-being. My work is about more than just transformation; it’s about restoring confidence and harmony from the inside out.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I always encourage newer professionals to stay true to their passion and embrace who they are. Early in my career, a mentor once told me I might never make it because I didn’t talk enough. That comment stayed with me — but over time, I learned to see my quiet nature as a strength. Many of my clients value that peaceful space to relax and recharge during their appointments. It taught me that success in this industry doesn’t come from fitting a mold — it comes from owning your individuality and letting it shine through your work

Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?

If I knew I only had a decade left, I’d spend it surrounded by the people I love most — being fully present in every moment. I’d slow down, savor the simple things, and create space for connection, laughter, and peace. Life moves quickly, but when you learn to be present and grateful for each day, that’s when you truly start living.
