We were lucky to catch up with Jordan Blair recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jordan, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I haven’t, but it is something that I’m working on. At first, I used to ask myself, if you don’t believe in yourself, then who is going to believe in you? If you can’t even convince yourself, then how will you prove it to the world?
Then, I realized two things. I would hate to be 50 and know I was unhappy/wasted my life. Plus, I think about music and visuals so often, I can’t help but keep finding a way to incorporate them into my life. Reading The Artist’s Way helped me learn that creativity is the natural order of life. Meaning, creativity comes from the universe, God, the divine, or whomever you believe or pray to. So if I follow my creative yearning, I’m following and living in my purpose.
As I continued to achieve my goals and open myself up to understanding what life means to me, I questioned why can’t it be me? They say it’s a dime a dozen, but why not me? Now, I can’t shake that feeling that I really can do it. It begs the question, what is success to me?
I recently asked myself, but when? I’d say it could be 5, 10, 20, or 25 years from now. Which meant I had 4, 9, 19, or 24 more years to go. When I looked at it like that, it brought down my self-confidence a lot. Not knowing patience can be a confidence killer.
Then I saw a clip from the movie Soul on TikTok, and the character says, “I heard this story about a fish. He swims up to the older fish and says, ‘I’m trying to find this thing they call the ocean. ‘The ocean?’ says the older fish. ‘That’s what you’re in right now.’ ‘This?’ says the young fish. ‘This is water. What I want is the ocean.’ It’s a fun paradox. I feel like I haven’t done anything with my life because I haven’t achieved all of my bigger goals and dreams. At the same time, I have achieved some and others that weren’t a goal but things I am grateful I got to do.
Overall, I haven’t fully developed my confidence. Some days I feel like a million dollars, and other days I feel like crumbled trash that couldn’t make it into the garbage. Like all things, confidence is always changing, but I’m learning to stay present and document my achievements. So when I do something exciting or something my younger self would’ve died to do, I take a moment. I imagine a younger version of myself on Tumblr and think, if I saw myself doing what I’m doing now, I’d think I was cool. That’s how I am developing my confidence and self-esteem.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hey! I’m Kyros! I’m from New York, and I’m 23 years old.
When I was little, I used to dress up whenever anyone would come over and put on shows for guests at my house. So I guess you could say I was born knowing part of my purpose is to perform. Yet, people told me to pick a more practical route instead, and my dreams were tossed to the wayside. I have spent most of my life sleepwalking and pretending I didn’t want a creative career path, but my senior year in high school ruined that. After telling my parents I’d become an architect, my Mother asked me, “What do you think about every day when you wake up and when you go to bed?” I said, “My name is neon lights and performing.” She said, “Okay, then why are you going to school to be an architect?” What can I say, I woke up. Who wouldn’t after that conversation?
I spent the next 5 years in Chicago finding myself and learning what it means to be dedicated to my craft. In 2019, amid the pandemic and police brutality, I started a company, Fusion of Light Ent, with my business partner at the time, Tandrea Hawkins. It was during this time that I found my purpose. Our company allowed new and upcoming artists in Chicago to have a chance to be seen on stage. We worked with restaurants to have live music and dinner. We partnered with nonprofits and held events for artists to network, get creative jobs, and workshops to become better at their craft. We had fashion shows working with local designers, and we worked with Lollapalooza to put upcoming artists on the biggest stage in Chicago at the time. It’s here that I found my other purpose, which is using my platform to help amplify marginalized voices in my community.
Over the summer of 2024, I realized I needed to focus on my creative career and couldn’t run a company at the same time. I was neglecting my artistry and suppressing my voice. I threw an art show for my birthday and knew instantly, I needed to pivot.
I transferred the rights to my business partner and decided to move back home to New York. Ever since moving back in September I’ve done New York Fashion Week, traveled for acting roles, sang and showcased my art at art galleries, been to the most gossip girl type of parties, met my favorite artists on set for their music videos, and lastly, met some of the most fabulous, fearless, and wonderful people.
My birthday is on May 25th, and as it gets closer, I’m reflecting on everything and can’t wait to see what I create at 24!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say the most important piece of advice that I learned is to fail as fast as possible. A part of life is losing, not doing well as somebody else, and to put it harshly, failing. Just like when you succeed and do something well, it’s a metric to know what people like and what you like as well, so when you fail, it shows you what is not being well received, and then you can find a way to change it or promote it better.
Stay in your lane!! There will always be somebody out there in the world who is better than you. Someone will always not like you or think you’re talentless. When you realize this, it makes it easier to clap for people who are ahead of you and behind you. You’re all on the same journey and trying to be better than who you were yesterday.
If somebody does not pick you, that means you need to create your own space to be seen. Put on that show. Write your song. Find your beat and keep going until the world sees you for who you are. Unique.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
They helped me leave. When it was time to go to Chicago for college, they drove me 14 or 15 hours from New York. They didn’t want me to go, but they made sure I got there with everything from my stuffed animals to my favorite leather jacket.
Leaving allowed me to find myself. Allowed me to experience the world for the first time through a new lens. This time, when I fell, it was without a safety net, and that made me learn quickly about things I thought I knew about life, myself, love, and money. It forced me to see my parents not only as my parents but as people trying to understand and make gold out of shit just like me.
