Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jordan LeVan . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jordan LeVan , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Ever since I was a child, I’ve had to put more work into my ability to speak, which has given me an excellent work ethic. With my diagnosis of childhood apraxia of speech, a lifelong neurological speech disorder that presents difficulties in moving your facial muscles when desired, I’ve had to put in a lot of work to be able to speak today. Because I always wanted to talk, my speech difficulties prevented me from forming words until age five. I attended speech therapy on and off for over 12+ years, and despite experiencing times of defeat, I’ve always picked myself back up with resilience because I’ve always truly wanted to speak. To speak today, I constantly have to put more work into speaking as an adult with childhood apraxia of speech, but I never give up.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Jordan Christian LeVan, I am an author, advocate, public speaker, blogger, and tutor. I was born with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) a rare communication disorder that results in the brain having trouble moving the facial muscles to speak your inner thoughts, wants, and needs into spoken speech. I today advocate for CAS and overall disability awareness, acceptance, and pride. Today, I am focused on bringing awareness and understanding to CAS and effecting change politically to ensure everyone has adequate access to communication. I am writing my fifth book and planning the next section of my book tour. I also help connect families to communication through grants at “The Apraxia Foundation: Hearing All Voices” a 501(C)3 charitable nonprofit I founded in 2021.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three values I believe were most impactful on my journey are authenticity, vulnerability, and honesty. I believe being an advocate and a person who writes nonfiction about my real-life experiences makes these values essential. Practicing and embodying these values each day through not only words but also actions will reinforce that they are meaningful to you and align with your character.

We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
I believe investing effort in improving areas is equally important as focusing on our strengths, as any human being is capable of growth and self-improvement. I believe we can focus too much on our strengths and think we are inherently weak in some areas, but this isn’t the case. For me, being a lifelong committed learner means challenging my weaknesses in the hope that one day they will become my strengths.
