We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jordan McCray a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jordan , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Honestly, I used to view myself as being better than everyone else. However, I was afraid of embarrassing myself
which lead to me underperforming in most of the sports I participated in when I got into middle/high school.
Music was really the spark to me gaining confidence and self-esteem about myself because I felt like I was really
dope. The difference between this feeling though was that I didn’t care about embarrassing myself. Then most of
my friends started hearing about me rapping, so they wanted to hear me freestyle, and some of my music. Ever
since then I’ve been rapping, and I haven’t looked back. To sum it up, I just found something that I love to do and
stuck with it!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
To start off i’m an Artist looking to make a name for myself in the music industry. I currently intern at the biggest
studio in Tallahassee, Fl, also in the panhandle. My goal is to become a engineer and continue my career as an
artist in the industry. I’m really excited about these two current albums I’ve been working on for the past 6 months.
Which it never takes me this long to finish a mixtape or album, but this is going to be MAJOR, so I want to release it
the right way. The name of the first album is named ” Life of A 90’s Baby” and the second one is going to be called
“His Gospel” which is going to be a gospel album. I’m looking forward releasing those in the next 2months so be
looking forward to that!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Dedication, Focus, & Persistence! I’ve always been dedicated to make an impact in my community and beyond. I want to be able to give the next kid under me an opportunity to make an impact for his community and so forth.
I believe that, that’s important for us as a race to help create ways for our own people first.
Along the way, at times it got hard, but I’ve always remained focused on my goals & dreams. I always knew in my heart what I wanted to do, the only setback I faced was having the right resources. Having a shy personality wasn’t helping me out either. Thankfully, the more interactions I’ve had overtime the more comfortable I’ve become with meeting new people.
Lastly, being persistent, thugging it out through it all, and keeping faith in God first is what got me where I’m seated today. Never giving in to the naysayers and doubters but instead keeping my chin up and chest out ready for what comes with the territory. I realized at a point in my life nothing I earned worth having came easy. So, I developed the mentality of not wanting to have an easy life but a prosperous one. Which makes waking up everyday for me that much more grateful!
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
I’ve became closer with the Lord Almighty! I grew up in the church, and I always believed in God, but I never knew him for myself the way I do now. I only knew a version of what I was taught, not of my own understanding from asking for discernment from the Lord. The more I’ve grown spiritually the better I’ve become with everything that I do or touch such as rapping, writing, engineering, more patience, more honesty, etc. I have definitely seen a major shift over the past 12 months of my life.
