Meet Jordan Pickett

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jordan Pickett a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jordan, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?

Self-discipline… arguably one of the most important qualities a person can have. If you do not have the ability to discipline yourself, you’re setting yourself up for failure in not only accomplishing your goals but in life itself.

You might be thinking, “well Jordan, people have other people to do that for them so they can just focus on the task”. Fair, but take the gym for example. Some people have a coach or gym trainer to create a meal plan, daily routine, a workout routine, etc. but the plans they create for you to follow, YOU have to do them. They could be at your bedside at 5am screaming for you to get up, heck, they could even throw you out of your own bed, but you still have to be the one to turn your brain on, get up, and choose to get stronger.

Now, take that same example and move forward in time. You followed the meal plans, the workouts, you’ve excelled, and you no longer have a trainer to tell you what to do.. are you still going to get the job done? For me, that’s where the rubber meets the road and the thing is, this doesn’t just revolve around the gym, this thing called “self-discipline” applies to almost anything in life. I have learned this through my own journey at my local gym, Triangle Fitness of Siler City; Personal Trainer: Matthew Downey, and through my career of music.

I have never had private lessons for music, playing instruments, or singing, but my Dad has shown me how to work hard and he helped lay the groundwork for my early days playing music. He, as well as the rest of my family, provided me with the love and support I needed to keep driving forward. With that said, it was up to me to keep practicing, keep playing, keep singing, keep showing up, keep investing rather than blowing the money I made.. Nobody is perfect so yeah, I’ve slipped up here and there but I have always taken self-discipline seriously and tried to recognize when I was off the intended path. In doing so, it has paid off time and time again. It has made me more successful and a stronger person. If more people could see the benefits of this in their own lives, the world would be a better place. That is why I feel it is so important for not just me but for everyone to have self-discipline.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a Country/ Christian Singer/ Songwriter out of Siler City, NC. I was born and raised in Silk Hope, where I still reside today. I love it here: our community is very tight and it’s an everybody knows everybody kind of town. I am 22 years old and began writing music when I was about 14. I was really tight with my Paw Paw so it hit me hard when he passed away in 2017. It was on that day that I wrote my first song.

Fast forward to today, I have written over 60 songs, I travel in a tour bus with the people that I love, gained mutual support with local businesses, have written songs that have been aired on top radio stations internationally, performed live shows across the surrounding states and have recently been featured on FOX8 News. I can’t begin to tell you how much fun this all has been and how grateful I am to be blessed with these opportunities.

I mentioned earlier that I am a “Country/ Christian” artist.. Well, that’s exactly right. I love Merle Haggard and all the “old country” songs, as some would say, just as much as I love Phil Wickham and K-Love radio. So if you come to a show of mine, you can expect to hear a little from both worlds as I tend to make them one. Some folks try to pin me down as primarily a singer, some as a songwriter, a content creator, a sound engineer.. and none of them would be wrong.

My week is a little all over the place when you start to break it down. I sing for my church, play piano and lead the choir on Sunday mornings with rehearsal during the week. Monday – Friday, I am balancing my time between interviews, social media content, learning new songs, booking shows, band rehearsals, etc. and my new job learning to be a mechanic. Recently, I have joined with “Silk Hope Transmissions”, a family owned and operated business which was built from the ground up by my Dad and his Dad (my Paw Paw who passed away and inspired my first song). There is just something special about being able to work with my family. It builds character, trust, strength and honest relationships. I love that I get to work during the week with my Dad and brother in the shop and then take off down the road on the weekends working together in the music industry.

A big shoutout to all of my sponsors, family, band, and to the fans as well. Nothing about what I have done and what I do would be possible without these folks. I’d also like to thank ALCOVETS (Alamance County Veterans) for all they do for our Veterans and I am proud to be partnering with them this year in hopes of giving back, raising money, and contributing to the needs of our local Veterans. You can find out more about them, how to contribute, and other info at: www.alcovets.org

2025 and its new look on my life has been just the right amount of different to keep me going. I am excited to grow with my band and as an artist as we progress through the year. One way I will be doing this is by getting in the studio and recording more music! I am really looking forward to what is to come in 2025, and if you are too, then stay up to date with my social media / website at: www.Jordanpickettmusic.com. See y’all down the road!!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1 – Priorities
2 – Your “why”
3 – No idle hands

1 – “Priorities.” I have actually always struggled with the thought of what they call “making it” in music because I established my priorities early on; is this a blessing or a curse? I guess the answer to that differs from person to person. Some may say that I am cutting myself short by not moving to Nashville, living the rockstar lifestyle, and searching for fame.. but I would say because of my priorities, I have it pretty dang good. I get to work with my family during the week as well as most shows I perform, I have support from local businesses that I actually have a connection to and I get the honor of representing them, and I am still around enough to be the pianist and music director at the church that I grew up in. If you can’t tell, faith and family are two things that are really important to me. I wouldn’t say that I am giving up something to have what I have, because I know what I want. When you know what you want, the definition of “making it” becomes your own.

2 – “Your why.” Everyone has to have a “why.” In my opinion, the best of the best, in whatever sport, job, task, etc. is the people who have a reason behind what they are doing. Kevin Durant once said, “Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard”; I find that to be true and relevant to what I’m saying because you may find someone who is really good at something but the one who outperforms that person is the one who works hardest. Who’s going to work hard? Someone with a reason to, someone with a drive, someone with a why. For me, you can re-read the above paragraph. I do what I do everyday for the glory of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for the family I have now, and for the family I hope to have of my own one day.

3 – “No idle hands.” That’s kind of something I started saying to myself recently. It basically means: stay busy and if you catch yourself with your hands in your pockets.. take ‘em out and do something. Now, there’s definitely a balance to this as I am also a firm believer in thinking about your actions before you do them. However, I also believe that every second I’m relaxing, there’s somebody out there working hard. Keeping this in the back of my mind doesn’t discourage me, it puts me back in the fight and gives me something to chase! I once read a bible verse about staying busy — Proverbs 6:6. : “Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise…” This verse basically speaks to the lazy person saying “you lazy fool, look at the ant and let it teach ya a thing or two”, suggesting that laziness leads to scarcity and warns against becoming idle.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?

I’m not much of a reader but there is one book, other than the Bible, that has played a crucial role in my life. This book is called “Mind Gym” Author: Gary Mack.

I refer to this book almost everyday. I’ll have to admit it, I haven’t completed it, but I’ve read the first half at least twice! I love what I’m reading and learning so much that I will literally start over to grasp as much knowledge as I can. The book is from the point of view of a sports psychologist who travels the world training and working with professionals of different sports; he proves just how powerful our mindsets are. He helps athletes tap into their full potential by training their mind just as one would train their body. Something that I love about this book is the quotes at the beginning of each chapter. One of my favorite quotes that has stuck with me: “Don’t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do” – John Wooden. It reminds me to focus on what I have and not what I don’t. It’s like driving down the road, there’s a reason the windshield is bigger than the rearview mirror.
