We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jordi B a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jordi, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Discovering my purpose has been a journey deeply rooted in my upbringing and the profound experiences of my travels. Growing up, art was a constant presence in my life, largely influenced by my father, who is a sculptor. Being around his creations and accompanying my parents to tattoo studios opened my eyes to the world of art from a young age. This exposure planted the seeds of my fascination with art and tattooing.
However, it was during my extensive travels across the Far East – to places like India, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Taiwan, and Vietnam – that I truly found my calling. Immersed in these diverse cultures, I came to a powerful realization about the privileges we have in the Western world. The freedom to choose our destiny is a luxury not afforded to everyone globally. This understanding was both humbling and enlightening.
I felt a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunities available to me, but more than that, I felt a sense of responsibility – almost an obligation – to fully embrace these privileges. It became clear to me that pursuing my passion wasn’t just a choice, but a duty to myself and the advantage I had been given.
Since then, I’ve committed to living on my own terms, driven by a deep-seated desire to fulfill my dreams. My journey has been about more than just becoming an artist; it’s been about honoring the opportunities I’ve been given and using them to create, inspire, and make a meaningful impact through my art.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Art, for me, has always been more than just a means of expression; it’s a powerful tool for advocacy and change. I am deeply committed to using my voice and talent to support causes that resonate with me. Whether it’s advocating for animal rights or raising awareness about critical social issues like human trafficking, my art is a conduit for making a difference. A poignant example of this was my participation in an event on November, 2022, at Tactical Fleet in Beverly Hills. This event, aimed at combatting human trafficking, was a significant opportunity for me to contribute to The Exodus Road Foundation, helping shine a light on this critical issue.
Professionally, my current focus is on creating new art for an upcoming exhibition centered around the theme of kindness. This theme is particularly close to my heart, as it reflects my belief in the power of empathy and compassion. I am excited to share this new body of work, which I hope will inspire and resonate deeply with audiences.
In addition to my art exhibitions, I am also expanding my creative reach through my line of t-shirts. This collection, available at www.jordib.art, is an extension of my artistic vision, allowing people to carry a piece of my art with them in their everyday lives.
And there’s something else brewing on the horizon, a project I’m currently immersed in. While details are still under wraps, I can hint that it’s set to bring a fresh and innovative twist to events in Los Angeles. This project is another step in my journey to blend art, advocacy, and community engagement in meaningful ways.
Through all these endeavors, my aim is to not only showcase my art but also to use it as a force for good. Whether it’s through exhibitions, merchandise, or special projects, the goal remains the same: to make a positive impact and bring attention to important causes.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, I’ve identified three core qualities that have been instrumental in my growth and success: endurance and persistence, belief in oneself, and the ability to connect with others.
Firstly, endurance and persistence are vital. This journey is a marathon, not a sprint. There will be times when progress feels slow, and challenges seem insurmountable. But it’s crucial to keep pushing forward. Consistency is key. Remember, nothing significant happens overnight. My advice to those starting out is to embrace patience and resilience. Understand that every small step is a part of a larger journey.
Secondly, belief in yourself and your path is essential. It’s easy to doubt your choices or compare your journey to others. But remember, every individual you admire started somewhere and likely faced similar doubts. They’re human, just like you. Believe in your unique path and trust that you’re doing what’s right for you at this moment. If you don’t believe in yourself, it’s hard to expect others to do so.
Lastly, the importance of connection, approachability, and a bit of nerve cannot be overstated. The world is built on relationships. Don’t be afraid to reach out, build your network, and offer help to others. The world often reflects back the energy you put out. Treat people with kindness and respect, and be open to forming new connections. A simple smile can open doors and create opportunities.
To summarize, remember that every great journey, every successful company, started from humble beginnings. Tesla, Apple, Microsoft – they weren’t always the empires they are today. They started in garages, built by individuals with dreams and the determination to realize them. Your journey might feel small or anonymous now, but with endurance, belief, and connections, you can build your own empire, step by step.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed, my primary strategy is to turn to meditation, but not necessarily in the traditional sense. For me, meditation is about being fully present and engaged in the moment, whether I’m painting, tattooing, or involved in any other activity. It’s about observing and immersing myself in the here and now, recognizing that this moment is all we truly have. We can plan for the future and learn from the past, but we mustn’t let either detract from our present experience.
Another perspective that helps me cope with feeling overwhelmed is remembering the transient nature of life. In a hundred years, none of us will be here. This realization puts things into perspective, reminding me that our time here is just a chapter in a much larger journey. It encourages me to appreciate life more, to plan for the future, yes, but not at the expense of enjoying the present.
My advice to others who feel overwhelmed is to find their form of meditation – an activity or practice that grounds them in the present. Understand that being overwhelmed is often a product of overthinking about what lies ahead or what has passed. By focusing on the now, you can alleviate some of that weight. And remember, the grand scheme of things offers a broader perspective that can be incredibly liberating. Enjoy life, cherish the moment, and let the future unfold as it will.
