Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jorge Alain Herrera. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jorge Alain, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?
My generosity is God’s generosity, not my own. I have come to a faithful understanding that what ever I do or give to others is doing and giving that which is the will of god. For example, tipping, it’s not my money. Sure, I have to first have the money to be able to make the tip, but I am convinced that the money that I am tipping never was and never will be mine. Then perhaps, God might see to it that you shall never be short on your tipping money, and that is all. Cary that same idea onto everything else that involves being generous.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I own and operate a full-service architecture firm based in Alpharetta, Georgia, specializing in high-end custom residential projects with limited commercial work. High-end custom design has always been my focus throughout my career, and I stayed true to that passion when starting my practice. Our projects extend south into various cities in Florida and north of Atlanta to Georgia’s lakes and mountains, with active projects in Ellijay and Lake Hartwell. I am NCARB certified and can take on projects in other states upon request, with a new residential project starting in Pennsylvania this November. Being a small firm with limited staff allows me to maintain direct, personal contact with each client, which I value greatly.
Our firm has seen significant demand in recent months, and we are considering options for expansion. While scaling the business is a goal, our top priority remains providing world-class service to each client, which has been rewarding in many ways. Additionally, we regularly assess our financials to ensure that our business decisions are wise and keep us profitable. ‘Not everything that glitters is gold’ serves as a reminder to stay grounded when evaluating growth opportunities. As long as I’m designing, I know I’m doing what I love.
Being intensive and intentional with the client’s vision, rather than imposing my own, sets me apart. This approach allows each project to have its own unique essence and serves as a true representation of my potential as a designer, adding to my portfolio without being limited by a single style or trend. However, I am beginning to see common themes and patterns in my work, and from these, a distinctive style may naturally emerge as our firm’s brand
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
One must be very observant of their natural skills and abilities—whether it’s a single talent or a range of them, identifying these strengths is crucial. Once you recognize what you love and enjoy, develop those skills and make them the foundation of your career. For me, I’ve always had a natural aptitude for art, especially hand drawing, and a strong talent for creativity. Math came easily to me as well, and my favorite subjects in school were Geometry and Trigonometry. When I first tried architecture and saw that we were using tools like the compass and straightedge, just as we had in Geometry, I was hooked!
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The Holy Bible stands above all other books for me. When you start to see success, challenges often arise to bring you down. This happened to me in my youth—I was an A+ student with honors and a bright future, but I had no faith and ended up dropping out of high school before completing my senior year. I believe that adversity doesn’t strike when you’re down; it comes when you’re making progress. The more I read the Bible, the stronger I feel, and the more protected I am.
My love for the Bible began with Proverbs, after hearing Dave Ramsey describe it as a kind of instruction manual for getting out of debt. Psalms was also an impactful starting point. About a year ago, I began reading the New Testament daily, and I was amazed by how much I had been missing. I feel that this is one of the last things Satan wants me to read.
I realize that discussing faith might be less common in these types of articles, and I respect everyone’s individual beliefs. My relationship with Jesus is central to who I am, and my answers would be very different without it.
