Meet Jorge Cancino

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jorge Cancino. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Jorge, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

The truth is that I haven’t, it’s still there sometimes, what I think is important in these situations is what are you willing to do next when you are having the symptoms, Are you going to keep pushing yourself or are you going to stop doing what you love to do? Regardless of what others think of you, more important is what you think about yourself, keep it positive as much as you can.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am the youngest of 6 and my family has always been musically inclined, I did studied music when I was a teenager but had always tilted towards films, and at the first opportunity, I went to cinematography school, bought my first DSLR camera and made some shortfilms and started Producciones Cancino, one thing led to another and I begun working as a wedding videographer for a local photographer, sometime later I booked my first client and transitioned as a photographer.

About 4 years ago I started a course for astrophotography and finally found something I felt was very special, there is something about it that makes me feel at ease in every sense, from planning the shots, traveling to dark skies, camping and feeling the crispy cold in your face, I love that, fortunately I found people with the same passion and every year we do a trip to the 3rd best dark sky in the world! San Pedro Martir in Baja California.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Communication is key in all areas, whether it is to convey a message, sell you art or even just networking, because in this line of work you are not just sharing or selling your art, you need to sell youself.

Be brave, don´t be afraid to try new things, learn the rules and then you can brake them to make it your own.

Keep practicing, as much as you can, surround yourself of people with the same interest, learn from them, there´s always something new to learn.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

I have found that taking a brake is the most helpfull, as long as you get back at it again. It´s normal to feel overwhelmed when you have a deadlines to meet, whenever this happens I start to set goal times, it might be 20 minutes or 30 minutes of none stop editting, then I take a 10 minute brake and after that I go at it again for another 20/30 minutes, this keeps the editing flowing.
