Meet Jorge De Los Ríos

We were lucky to catch up with Jorge De Los Ríos recently and have shared our conversation below.

Jorge, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My father, without a shadow of a doubt, was my first and most important role model. I vividly recall how he used to rise at 5 am every morning to work in his solar panel business. Witnessing his self-discipline and unwavering determination became my guiding light in life, particularly when it came to work ethic.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I was born and raised in Puerto Rico and have been passionate about the entertainment industry since my teenage years. This passion motivated me to study communications and engage in various independent projects throughout college. At the age of 24, I made the bold decision to move to Los Angeles, California, in pursuit of opportunities in the world of entertainment and digital marketing.

My career path was far from linear, with numerous ups and downs. I went from acting in small theater productions to working as an account manager at a global leader in film industry marketing data analytics and campaign management solutions..

Right from the beginning, the self-discipline instilled in me by my father served as my guiding principle, urging me to work tirelessly in each endeavor. My journey started at the age of 16 when I juggled a sales job at a clothing store while attending college, managing theater roles, and maintaining a relationship. The years of managing this hectic schedule laid the foundation for my mental strength and honed my interpersonal and intrapersonal skills.

After graduating in telecommunications, I made the move to Miami for a brief period and then relocated once more to Los Angeles, where I currently reside.

Upon arriving in Los Angeles, I initially ventured into the entertainment industry as a background actor. Over time, I transitioned into the car sales business, experiencing the highs and lows that come with this industry. The challenges were no secret, but my work ethic propelled me to excel, and I earned a promotion to the position of Internet Sales Manager. It was during this role that I delved into the intricacies of digital marketing, taking the first steps toward developing my personal digital brand.

It was at this moment that I began purposefully distributing content on social media. These publications catapulted me into creating my own business and opened the doors to participating in interviews, podcasts, and various projects and opportunities.

My journey in the realm of digital marketing continues to this day. I’ve had the privilege of traveling, participating in projects both in front of and behind the camera, and most recently assisting clients in crafting effective digital marketing strategies.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back at my journey, I believe that three qualities have had a significant impact on my path: intrapersonal skills, self-discipline, and patience. It’s not easy to pinpoint just a few, as there are numerous factors that contribute to anyone’s journey, but these stand out for me.

Intrapersonal skills have been crucial. Understanding myself has allowed me to set clear priorities and stay true to my goals. It’s a constant process, and I’d advise those at the beginning of their journey to spend time reflecting on their strengths, weaknesses, and what truly matters to you. This self-awareness provides a foundation for the decisions you’ll make along the way.

Self-discipline is another essential quality. It’s not just about sticking to a routine, but finding that inner drive to turn plans into action. To those starting out, I’d recommend setting realistic, achievable goals and creating a structure that keeps you on track. Surround yourself with support, whether it’s a mentor or a supportive community, as they can help bolster your discipline.

Patience, the third quality, is often underestimated. In today’s fast-paced world, waiting for results can be challenging, but it’s a vital part of the journey. My advice to those in the early stages is to understand that great things take time. Embrace the process, savor the small victories and be persistent. Building a meaningful career and relationships often requires patience, but it’s worth it in the end.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I’ve encountered moments in my life when I not only felt overwhelmed but also battled depression, panic attacks, and anxiety attacks. During those times, I find solace in the notion that our brains are survival machines designed to shield us from potential dangers, even those that exist only in our imagination. This brain function served our ancestors well, as it prepared them for physical threats like a lurking tiger, triggering the ‘fight or flight’ response necessary for survival.

Today, our world is vastly different. While we may not face the immediate danger of being devoured by a tiger, we still experience the ‘fight or flight’ response in our personal and professional lives. I choose to keep this in perspective and remind myself that my brain might be playing tricks on me when there’s no genuine peril. Suddenly, missing a “deadline” doesn’t appear to be the end of the world.

I’m also deeply drawn to the wisdom of Stoicism, a philosophy that urges us to concentrate on matters within our control while disregarding those beyond our influence. It teaches us that fixating on the latter only leads to unhappiness. Equally important to me is dedicating time to maintain my physical fitness, as it significantly aids in managing the stresses of day-to-day life and keeping my mind clear.
