We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Josalyn Sanders. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Josalyn below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Josalyn with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic comes from my unique ability to take any situation and make it my own. I’ve always been they type of person to put my own spin on things to make them work for me. I also believe that a working hard brings great rewards later, so this keeps me laser focused on what matters most in my personal and professional life.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m Josalyn S. Sanders, a caterer, author & philanthropist from Memphis, TN. I started my catering service, Ms. J’s Kitchen February 1, 2020. I specialize in event catering and chocolate dipped desserts. I am the author of the cookbook entitled “A Taste of Love from Ms. J’s Kitchen” published in 2019. I’ve had the pleasure of working with several businesses and organizations in my hometown such as the Memphian Hotel , Memphis – Shelby County Schools, The Cooper Young Festival and many more. I love spreading joy through my love of great food to people of all walks of life. I love giving back to the children of Memphis every year by hosting the Ms. J’s Kitchen School Supply Drive. I am a 2023 Kindle Award recipient for various works in my community and the city of Memphis. Thank you so much for taking the time to cover my journey.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Although running a business has it’s challenging moments, it comes with a great share of triumphs as well. I learned early in business that trials are necessary and failure hurts, but as long as you pick your self up and try harder, NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE. Failing at something could be used as a teaching moment to self. Being the projectionist that I am, not succeeding in a particular field or area was hard for me to accept until it happened a few times. From that moment on, I’ve never gotten discouraged because I know that I can do anything I put my mind to. This mindset allows me to enjoy the triumphs that come along the way because giving up will NEVER be an option.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I’m afraid or overwhelmed, I turn to my faith. I was raised in the church and I have a strong relationship with God. I know that without him in my mind, my heart, and my life nothing would be possible, I’m am truly thankful and I pray every single day. I am humbled that I get to share the talent he gave me with people everywhere. That makes me so happy.
