We caught up with the brilliant and insightful JOSE CARLOS VELAYARSE a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
JOSE CARLOS, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
For a long time I have worked within the fine arts and music, all this has allowed me to learn a rhythm of work that will enable me to be constantly creative and proactive. Fortunately, I have developed in these two creative branches with which I have been getting to know myself much better and affirming myself in the different stages of my life. Creativity is always in all human beings but it loses strength when we believe that we cannot be creative. I constantly fight against these fears and I am in constant search of new challenges and experiences that can contribute to my artistic work, I think it is this struggle that keeps me in constant activity, both in music and painting.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am currently involved in several musical projects and I continue to develop my career in painting. I am a painter by profession and a musician at heart, I have plans to make my seventh solo exhibition next year, I have been working together on painting and its aspects with music, especially with Latin jazz.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Since I was very little I always liked colors and music, I think I have been able to develop myself well in knowing what I want to do with my art and make it very clear what things I don’t want to do. If I have to rescue a quality is that I was always very stubborn in what I created artistically, I never let myself be belittled or influenced in a bad way. I always knew what my path was and I am still learning.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
First of all my mother has been very important in my artistic growth, giving me all her support when I wanted to develop and learn. She always supported me, I owe much of what I am now to her. On the other hand, my wife has been part of many of my failures and achievements, she has been able to accompany and advise me, definitely, her company and support are very important to develop me as an artist and musician.
