We recently connected with Jose Rico and have shared our conversation below.
Jose, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I have always been interested in many topics, how stuff works, finding a different perspective on things and trying to find the truth, I guess that is just how my mind works, perceiving the world with big picture lenses. From a young age, I liked music and instruments. Then I started learning about life philosophies, different ways of living around the world, customs, languages, foods, their music, and dances, and the history of things. I like learning about contrasting topics, the uncommon too, I believe all of this combined with my trying to find myself in those cultures, and always trying to create something has led me to and continues to show me a way how to do things from my personal view of the world. Existence is such a mystery, and time alive is not enough to explore it all, the curiosity to learn it brings ideas to the mind.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I consider myself an Artist, I am on a journey of self-discovery and creation, I like music, I write songs, I sing, I play musical instruments, I compose music, I act, I write stories and I make videos. All of this is the consequence of my upbringing and my personality.
I am taking filmmaking and theatre lessons from UCSD extended studios’ special program for Latinos, and I have already shot my 1st short documentary named Mexico: “Culture without boundaries”, it will be screened in the Digital Gym cinema alongside my classmate’s projects. And I will be in the Playwright “The Chocolate”.
I am working on a 3erd music composition album, I keep practicing singing.
I am creating, I am continuously learning and finding myself so that I can create something better, bigger, and original, and since I went to business school I have tried to find a way to make this a way of living. I also went to Psychology school, and I am currently working with kids with special needs.
I am working on developing those two paths, I am following my dreams and working on creating a family dream.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I believe the three areas a person needs to continuously be working on are self-improvement, discipline, and integrity, as long as a person keeps refining the process of self-discovery, self-development, and self-creation, with consistency, and no cheating on himself, the person will eventually find a personal way that will make him feel proud of himself.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
In a world where all of us are constantly bombarded with the idea that we are not enough just being ourselves, that we always need more and better, we do find ourselves in situations of fatigue, stress, and being overwhelmed, which causes mental and physical problems that don’t let us perform at the best of our capacities, and in worse situations, this goes to more serious situations where professional intervention it is no longer an option but a must, so It is necessary to learn to take breaks, to learn our limits, and to respect them, for our well being and the ones around us.
I am guilty of spending too much time trying to learn and develop, and I feel the strain sometimes, that’s when I have to take breaks, because I literally cannot do more, so I am working on that area, learning and respecting my limits, taking breaks, exercising more, watching something light, reading something different and easier, listening to favorite music instead of listening attentively to study it, and singing for me is always a relaxing time, taking time to do nothing, time with my thoughts, alone, but also trying to spend more time with people outside of my projects.
