We were lucky to catch up with Jose Rodriguez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jose, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic is deeply rooted in my upbringing. I was raised in a single-parent household and watched my mother work tirelessly to provide for us. We didn’t have much, but she made sure we had what we needed and seeing her determination and resilience instilled a drive in me from a young age. That foundation shaped how I approach everything in life, including my career.
When my daughter was born in 2010, everything shifted. She became my ultimate motivation. I wanted to give her the kind of life and opportunities I didn’t have growing up. That meant pushing myself harder, staying committed, and constantly striving to grow, not just as a photographer, but as a person.
I believe that consistent hard work, gratitude, and a strong “why” are what helped me become one of the leaders in the Tri-State photography scene. And I carry those values with me in every shoot, every client interaction, and every new goal I set.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Becoming a photographer has been a life-changing journey for me—not just professionally, but personally. It’s given me a platform to connect with people from all walks of life and taught me the importance of truly seeing and understanding others. Through my lens, I’ve learned how to listen more deeply, communicate more meaningfully, and build strong, trusting relationships with clients, collaborators, and my community. Photography has helped me become more empathetic, patient, and confident in both personal and professional spaces.
What excites me most about photography is the ability to tell stories—real stories, raw and beautiful—that capture moments people will cherish forever. Whether I’m photographing a wedding, a family milestone, or a community event, my goal is always to honor the essence of the people and cultures I’m capturing. There’s something incredibly powerful about freezing a moment in time that tells a story of love, strength, resilience, and identity.
As someone with humble beginnings from a proud Puerto Rican background, giving back is not just important—it’s a responsibility I carry with deep purpose. My roots taught me the value of hard work, gratitude, and community, and I carry those lessons with me every day in my work and in how I choose to lead my life.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my journey has been the chance to mentor and empower young, aspiring creatives—helping them build confidence in their talents, navigate their paths, and realize their full potential.
Above all, I am most proud of being a role model for my daughter. I want her to see what it looks like to pursue your passion with honor, integrity, and perseverance. I want her to know that dedication and heart matter. That giving back is just as important as moving forward.
Looking ahead, I’m working on expanding my services to include more community-based initiatives and creative collaborations with local artists and nonprofits. I believe photography can be a tool for change, healing, and unity—and I’m committed to using my art to uplift others and reflect the beauty and strength of our shared experiences.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey, the three most important qualities that have carried me through are consistency, resilience, and integrity.
First and foremost, giving up has never been an option for me. No matter how challenging things got—and there were definitely hard moments—I stayed consistent. Showing up every day, even when the results weren’t immediate, helped me build trust, improve my craft, and grow my business step by step. For anyone starting out, I can’t emphasize enough how powerful it is to stay committed, even on the days you feel like you’re not making progress. Consistency compounds over time, and it’s one of the biggest keys to success.
Second, resilience has been vital. Being a creative entrepreneur means facing rejection, setbacks, and uncertainty. But every challenge is also a lesson. Resilience is what helped me bounce back stronger each time. I learned to see obstacles as opportunities to grow and to keep going with the same fire and focus I had on day one. To anyone beginning their journey: embrace the bumps in the road—they will shape you in the best possible ways.
Finally, I’ve always led my business with honor and dignity. I believe in treating every client, collaborator, and community member with respect, transparency, and care. My work is not just about photography—it’s about the relationships I build and the trust people place in me. Leading with integrity has opened more doors than any shortcut ever could. If you stay true to your values and your word, your reputation will speak volumes.
My advice for anyone starting out: stay consistent in your efforts, build resilience by welcoming challenges, and lead with honor in all you do. It may take time, but the impact and the legacy you leave behind will be worth every step.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Over the past 12 months, my biggest area of growth has been both artistic and professional. Being invited to photograph larger-scale events and work with a more high-end, selective clientele has truly pushed me to grow in my craft as a photographer. These experiences have challenged me to refine my skills, pay closer attention to detail, and deliver an elevated level of service and creativity. I’ve grown more confident in my ability to capture not just beautiful images, but meaningful moments that reflect the luxury, intention, and emotion behind each event.
Another major area of growth has been expanding the services I offer. Adding content creation—especially Instagram reels—has opened up a whole new avenue for my business. Not only has it allowed me to showcase my work in a more dynamic way, but it’s also helped me attract a wider range of clients who are looking for both photography and digital storytelling. This shift has allowed me to connect with more modern, social media-savvy audiences and position my brand in a more innovative, forward-thinking light.
Overall, this past year has been about true growth—both creatively and strategically. I’m excited to continue building on that momentum and offering my clients a truly elevated experience.
