We were lucky to catch up with Jose Vargas Zapata recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jose, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Here’s a story that highlights my journey of resilience:
Growing up and having relationship issues with my father and living in different neighborhoods, I was drawn to the streets and eventually became a gang member. But after a stint in prison, I hit rock bottom. It was there, in that darkest moment, that I discovered my resilience. I realized I had two choices: give up or use my experiences to make a difference.
I began to mentor fellow inmates, sharing my story and encouraging them to seek a better path. Upon release, I dedicated myself to helping at-risk youth avoid the mistakes I made. Through my work as a Youth Mentor, Certified Life Coach, and Recovery Specialist, I’ve seen countless individuals transform their lives.
My resilience comes from:
Self-reflection:
Understanding my past and how it shapes my present.
Purpose:
Knowing my mission to empower others drives me forward.
Community:
Surrounding myself with supportive people who uplift me.
Compassion:
Extending kindness and empathy to myself and others.
Perseverance:
Pushing through challenges, no matter how daunting.
Through my Podcast, written works, and speaking engagements, I share my story and practical guidance to inspire hope and resilience in others. As a devoted father and husband, I’ve learned that nurturing relationships and fostering a supportive community is crucial.
My journey teaches me daily that resilience is not about being unbreakable; it’s about being brave enough to face your struggles, learn from them, and use them to make a positive impact.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As a Recovery Specialist, Youth Mentor, and Certified Life Coach, I’m passionate about empowering individuals to overcome adversity and reach their full potential. My journey from a former gang member and prison inmate to a dedicated change-maker has taught me the power of resilience, and I’m committed to sharing that with others.
Through my work, I help individuals and communities break free from cycles of trauma, addiction, and limitation. My approach combines compassion, empathy, and evidence-based strategies to foster lasting transformation.
I’m excited to share that my upcoming book, “The Power of Resilience,” will be released soon! This book distills my experiences and expertise into a practical guide for overcoming life’s challenges and unlocking inner strength.
In addition to my writing, I host the popular “Joeypodcasttv” on Spotify and YouTube, where I share inspiring stories, expert insights, and practical advice on resilience, personal growth, and recovery.
What sets my brand apart is its authenticity and heart. I’ve walked the path of struggle and redemption, and I’m dedicated to helping others do the same. My work is about more than just personal growth – it’s about community building, social impact, and creating a ripple effect of hope and resilience.
Stay tuned for upcoming events, workshops, and initiatives focused on youth empowerment, recovery support, and community development. I’m committed to making a positive impact and inspiring others to do the same.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three key qualities that have made the greatest impact:
1. _Resilience_: My ability to bounce back from adversity, including my experiences with gang life and prison, has been crucial in transforming my life and helping others.
To develop resilience, I advise others to learn from their failures, practice self-care, and cultivate a growth mindset. Focus on progress, not perfection.
2. _Authentic Leadership_: Sharing my story, vulnerabilities, and passions has allowed me to inspire and empower others. To develop authentic leadership, I recommend embracing your unique voice, values, and experiences. Practice empathy, active listening, and transparency to build trust and connection with others.
3. _Resourcefulness_: Adapting, learning, and innovating in the face of challenges has been essential in my journey. To develop resourcefulness, I suggest embracing lifelong learning, seeking diverse perspectives, and experimenting with new approaches. Focus on solutions rather than problems, and cultivate a network of supportive relationships.
For those just starting their journey, I offer these tips:
– Be patient and compassionate with yourself as you grow and learn.
– Seek out mentors, coaches, or role models who embody the qualities you aspire to develop.
– Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and learning.
– Practice self-reflection and journaling to clarify your values, passions, and goals.
– Build a supportive community that encourages and inspires you to reach your full potential.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
