Meet Joseph “DJ Dimension” Mercado

We were lucky to catch up with Joseph “DJ Dimension” Mercado recently and have shared our conversation below.

Joseph, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I’m not sure if there is one particular answer for this question so I’ll share a story of how creativity has been alive in my life every step of the way. You see I have always been a creative person, as a kid I can remember loving art in all forms and as life went on I found music to be my passion and during the late 80’s became a DJ. Fast forward to the early 2000’s when I reached a point of becoming a rising star in the Electronic Music genre and creativity went from imagination to competition. The art that I once loved began to consume me and the stressful lifestyle of the music industry almost ended my life ultimately becoming a very dark period of creativity for me. Years went by and my mindset in regards to creativity hadn’t shifted much but nonetheless creativity was always there and soon the seed of creativity that had been buried for years began a process of re-birth and this time I made the conscious choice to collaborate with creativity, then in one split moment my love for the music transcended limits into all forms of art just as as once did as a kid. The experience became an awakening of acceptance and appreciation, now creativity is alive in every single thing that I experience.

“Creativity is not a foot race and success over the efforts of another limits the very purpose of creativity itself. Art is and must be, open-ended. It cannot, by its very nature, be limited by its relationship to others.” – Chuck Jones

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I think the three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey have been resiliency, acceptance and imagination . Being able to adapt to ever changing situations and reinvent myself has been my super power allowing me to grow in ways that truly represent my authentic self and purpose. Everyone has their own journey  to experience so a major key to discovering the qualities that bring out the best version of yourself takes self-care, self-awareness and lots of patience.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
As an artist life can become very stressful at times so many things in life can become distractions and end up weighing us down negatively impacting our creativity, relationships, business and ultimately ourselves. It becomes important to find healthy ways to manage stress. that will best benefit a busy lifestyle.
